get an external enclosure from ebay or something, inside needs to be sata, outside USB.

like 10-15$. plug it in, boot from OSX cd's, open disc utility, and restore the new drive from the old one.

    bam.

Just buy an external 2.5" SATA enclosure. You can then put either HD into the enclosure, and use Disk Utility to do a restore from one disk to the other. You will then be able to use the new HD (may it be external or not) just like you used to use the old HD without having to make any changes or registration or whatever.

If u do decide to buy an external enclosing for your 2.5" drive. Just be mindfull that a lot of enclosures have a limit of 160gb or 250gb. just fyi

You're making things too difficult for yourself. If you just want to keep one folder, then just install OS X on your new HD and pop your old one into a 2.5" SATA external enclosure and drag the files over. Alternatively you could just do a HD restore from your current to your new, and save yourself the trouble of installing OS X again.

The other option is to buy a external drive like the western digital passport, which comes in 320Gb. I used the 250Gb version to do the upgrade, and it worked really well. Just pop open the external case switch out the drives and now you have a nice case for your old drive!

ps the other bonus is that this should be the cheaper option too.

i wouldn't recommend upgrading from 250gb to 320gb as it seems you don't really need the space.

atleast wait until 500gb drives are available so the upgrade is more substantial, if you aren't getting close to filling up the 250gb drive I wouldn't worry about it.

I agree, if your only using 50Gb at the moment, then there is no real need for the minor upgrade from 250 to 320Gb. Also it sounds like you/or someone has already done the 80 to 250Gb upgrade already. I would wait until you get closer to filling the 250... then there might be 500Gb available or the 320 will be alot cheaper.

Just to toss this out there, you can also use an external enclosure to do a direct clone from a smaller drive to a larger one using Carbon Copy Cloner.
