Making Iphone share its 3g internet to MBP thru wireless? Has anyone have the app to do that? My Aunt would use her 3g connection from her phone sending wifi signals for the mbp to use. Thanks in advance.

I've recently updated to iOS 4.3 (from jailbroken 4.1) and I now have the option to share my 3G connection:

Settings > General > Network > set "Personal Hotspot" to On

Off course, Apple claims that your provider needs to support this option and that optional charges are possible.
I haven't tried it out myself, so I'm not sure if it will work and if your provider really needs to support this option or not. Maybe this is only the case for AT&T and Verizon, and so maybe it works without problems with your provider.

What iPhone does she have? It is possible but, to my knowledge, only the iPhone 4 natively supports it (as in creating a wi-fi network) through either at&t or Verizon and they both want you to pay an additional ~$20 a month (you are also limited to 2GB of data a month through each service provider). There are other options that work even on the first generation iPhone but they ALL require jailbreaking. Jailbreaking doesn't take too much effort but she will have to keep in mind that she can't just update iOS whenever she wants. She will have to wait until Apple releases a new version of iOS, give the jailbreaking community about a month, download iOS and update her iPhone, and then jailbreak it again (updating iOS removes anything associated with jailbreaking).

That is really the only limitation to jailbreaking. Other than that, you can find plenty of apps (though the good ones are $5-$15) that will turn the iPhone into a mobile 3G hotspot after jailbreaking.

I don't know, I don't have an iPhone. I just happen to know this information in case I ever happen to be a contestant on Jeopardy. I know of a few places where she can look but I don't want to come off like I am "advertising" other forums.

If it's jaibroken, you can install 'MyWi' through Cydia to enable internet tethering.

MyWi is basically the Cydia sponsored tether app. Go for that.

    MyWi or TetherMe FTW.

I especially get better speeds & Latency via using Bluetooth.

BTW .... TetherMe is way cheaper.

In the meantime I've tested the native 'Internet Tethering' on my iPhone 4 with iOS 4.3

    - through Wifi: works flawlessy
    - through USB: my MBP does not recognize my iPhone as a network device
    - through Bluetooth: not tested, and I'm not planning on this either since I find BT somewhat of a battery hog (for my laptop as well as for my phone)

I don't have any specific options activated for this on my provider's data plan, so I still suspect this applies mainly to the US (AT&T/Verizon).

You may not have the options activated but you will get charged for it as neither at&t or Verizon offer free hotspot creation. They both charge an additional fee. at&t has started going after people who have jailbroken their iPhones and are using 3rd party hotspot apps. They are sending a message saying that the feature requires an additional fee and that they must pay it. I don't think anything has come out of it yet but I wouldn't be surprised if at&t starts locking people's accounts until they fork over the extra $20 a month. Verizon has yet to do anything with my rooted Droid X as I would prefer to go that route. Verizon is also charging $20 a month but it is limited to 2GB while the data accessed through my phone is "unlimited." Right now, even with the 3rd party hotspot app, I am only using about 3GB of data a month. So I am not in the top tier 5GB group that could experience throttling.

I don't see what the big deal is as data is data but wireless companies want you to pay more for it.

I've been tethering at least twice a week on my jailbroken iPhone (mainly using MyWi and TetherMe - bluetooth... to a PC), and AT&T has never said a thing to me. I use around 1.5-2GB a month in data. I also have the old unlimited / 5GB(?) plan.

That is because they are in the process of trying to stop users. They didn't send out a blanket statement to everyone, they are going after the people who use a large amount of data not accessed directly by their phone on their plan. They have to look at how each customer uses their data plan to see if they are tethering without paying. It is something they recently started less than two week ago.
