    Hi guys,

I am considering getting a MBP ($1799 + a free iPod),I am having a hard time deciding between the LCD--matt or glossy.

I personally like the glossy version, but I heard that the glossy version has more problems such as flickering--is this true?

Moreover, my work involves staring at the LCD for 8 hours everyday. So I am very concerned about the LCD--which version strains the eyes faster with prolonged use?

    Thank you!

For staring at for long periods of time, it is generally accepted that matte is easier on the eyes.

If i were you though, i would go to a local apple store, and play with both versions for a little while to see which you like better.

Agreed, you should check them out in person. The main reason some people prefer the matte screens is because they do pro photo retouching and the glossy can give slightly false results with the way it displays colors. The reds and blacks are very deep with the glossy screens so pro photo editing needs a matte screen.
Personally I love the glossy but only in the notebooks. My 23" cinema display looks great as a matte.

I just got a Macbook, and I didn't even realize it was a glossy screen until someone asked me about it. There is no where near the level of gloss you'd see on most consumer notebooks. It hasn't been an issue with glare so far.

also, the matte version is about 95% the quality that the glossy is in terms of the way it looks...I had to ask the guy in the store which was which...ended up getting the matte

Completely untrue. I liked the glossy better when I saw it at the store. In terms of color clarity/accuracy - I would say it's pretty hard to determine from the naked eye if either one is better. In terms of eye strain, the higher resolution, small text, and small screen is more of a strain then the "shineyness" of the screen. You'd be better off with a 17."
