So how long do you really think it'll be? Will we be able to order them after WWDC? I want a MBP and after selling both of my laptops, I have the cash. Should I hold off for a month or do you think it'll get pushed back?

well, even if it comes out at the slated time, something tells me it will take apple more time to get them incorporated into the mbp. most other dealers will have less problem b/c their cpus are socketed. they can just remove the core duo and put in the core 2 duo. since macbook pros have soldered cpus, this complicates things.

I kind of doubt they will refresh any of the Intel Macs before the line is fully switched. I would say October/November is a better bet.

Sorry to say this, but u can't wait till the next big bang always. I mean, when a Core 2 Duo lappy comes out, a Core 3 Duo will be announced, and dated, are you gonna push back everytime?

Yes, but with the 64bit age coming on, it feels much nicer to know that you have a 64bit processor and not a 32bit in the piece of hardware you intend on using for the next 4 years.

I think we will see the Merom when the Santa Rosa platform comes out, as the Santa Rosa has a faster bus speed, making the change more meaningful. However I wouldn't say it would be beyond them to do it before then, as they were quick to put faster processors as the 2.16 Duo came out and such.

I weighed all this in my recent purchase, and chose to buy now. I'm going to college this fall and needed a notebook and doubted that they would be putting out a Merom MBP before september enough to make the purchase now and enjoy during the summer aswell.

I just want a Macbook that has more shared memory than 64 MB. Any chance of that any time soon?

true but for me, I can take my brothers centrino 1.6ghz into university...so time is not a problem for me(that is if it comes out before xmas this year)...santa rosa is ages away...and if apple does decide on updating the mb/mbp when the 800fsb chipset takes over...it will probably be Q3 2007...so if anything they need something to fill the gap as their pc counterparts will have T7200 667FSB Merom's in them for the same if not less than the pc laptops are right now....I'd think it'd be wise for apple to atleast incorporate it as a temporary solution....and fix all this crap about heat/moo/whining with a cooling system revamp and revised logic board design.

Apple probably won't change the amount of allocated RAM until Merom is released. Once it is, Apple is going to have to tweak all of their current MacIntels, so there is a chance of it happening. As far as a dedicated solution goes, I doubt that Apple will put anything into the MacBook, beacuse it'll give competition to the MBP and probably cause heat problems.

ugh, everyone was like 'when are intel macs out?? should I wait?' now that they're out everyones saying 'when are core duo 2 macs out?? should I wait?' its always gonna be like that. If you want it, dont wait. In a year then the macbooks will have the X3000 intel integrated, and there will be 800MHz santa rosa in all the laptops, and the desktops will be using conroe or woodcrest or whatever its called and will all be quad core, but thats not for a year. If your on here asking if you should wait you obviously want one now, the ones that are out are perfectly fine performance wise its really a question of how long can you wait?

And 64 bit processors have been out long for the consumer market. A amd 3000+ is 64 bit but that doesn't mean it will be faster, or better than a core duo. Theorically, some apps would be slower on a 64 bit enviroment.

Windows XP for 64 bit was released, but it lacks the support of the 32 bit one. Vista 64 bit might be the hit between 32 bit and 64 bit for consumer PCs. It took from the XP release in 2001 to 2006-7 to release Vista, so that is a 5 year support for a 32 AND 64 bit version OS. And I'm not mispreciating MacOSX and other operating systems, but the reality is that windows PCs are the widest in the world.

In 2 words, 64 bit is deffinetly the way to go, but its not a today's nor inmediate future need(5 years INHO)

I don't think Apple would redesign the logic board just in time for that board to be second class for what would be by then inevitability of the Santa Rosa becoming standard. I was under the impression Santa Rosa would be around by possibly Q1 or Q2 2007 and the way Apple really led the way on the Duo release, I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same case with Santa Rosa. Also I believe two additional Core Duos have been released (one being a 2.33 IIRC) which apple might up the MBP to keep it cutting edge.

But then again Apple/Mac is so secretive, at the August convention they might even be announcing that they are selling out to Dell and Microsoft respectively. So its all speculation, which in this sort of scenario sucks.

Since Merom is directly interchangeable with Yonah, I'm pretty sure Apple will debut them in August with the other 64 bit machines. It's a simple, logical move that probably wont be more costly for Apple, and will be another marketing hook for consumers...and since OSX is a 64bit OS, I'm sure a few apps will be able to take advantage of it.
