I bought a few days ago the Targus "Especial Edition Urban"... but if you need something to carry your books you need something big. Maybe Targus Urban bag? its really big ;)

While a messenger bag may look cool, it is not an ideal solution for carrying large amounts of stuff (e.g. books, laptop, etc.). If you will be walking for an extended period of time, then you will wish you had a backpack. I ride a bike everywhere, and I've learned this from experience. A well-designed messenger bag is good when you're riding, but if you have to walk more than five minutes with a heavy load, then it sucks.

If you still want a messenger bag, then I have a lot of recommendations for you. Can you be more specific in what you're looking for? Where do you live?

I use a Crumpler bag(Barney Rustle Blanket) + either the STM Glove or Crumpler School Hymn to carry around my laptop and books. The Glove/Hymn are a sleeve that protects my laptop if I want to take it around in a separate bag.

    Is that Tennessee?

I have a Crumpler camera bag that I really like, and I'm sure their larger bags are good too. If you want something a little less traditional, but more functional, then I recommend getting something from one of the many companies that make messenger bags for cyclists. Some of the better ones that I know of are Reload, Chrome, Under The Weather, and PAC bags, but they aren't the only companies that make quality messenger bags. This type of bag is good because it is weatherproof and very durable. Most of those companies also sell notebook inserts, but you could use anything really.

If you're looking for something more traditional, then you should check out Zappos, one of my favorite online retailers.

The OP it seems has already decided on his bag, but I just wanted to add my two cents. When I invested in my MBP 2.2GHz, I also invested in a Tom Bihn Brain Cell and the Tom Bihn Brain Bag backpack.

Although it was expensive, I have no regrets, and the customer service was excellent. In fact, they sent me the wrong Brain Cell and I only realized that till I got to Trinidad, and they sent me the correct one within a week of me emailing them, and told me whenever I get back in the US to send back the wrong one.
