I've noticed this computer hasn't gotten much love. Any particular reason? I will probably go buy this computer later this week or maybe even later today. I was doing a bit of research online and everything is about the new 13" with the "force touch" keypad and of course the new lightweight Macbook. Both are great computers for different kinds of users. No need to get into that debate. People can spend their money however they deem necessary. I've played with the new touch pad and it's really a nice feature. However, I don't feel like I've ever read any legitimate complaints about apple touch pads in the past. So I'm sure I'll survive with the now "old" style.
I'm just wondering if I'm missing something because this 15" seems like a great laptop. I'd get it for $2299. The price doesn't bother me. Anyone know of the next big apple event? How far away are we? I only ask because that's probably when the next big thing will be announced. I doubt I'd be willing to wait, unless something is coming up literally next week. Otherwise I think I'll just put the trigger on this guy and enjoy myself.
I'm referring to:

WWDC is in June but no one ever has an idea what will come up.
I have two of those models still and don't mind it depending on your needs. its one of my least favorite for bootcamping and running hard though, due to driver and throttle issues. ( and subjectively I have killed 3 of those 512 SSD's )
Personally I like the older style touchpad than the new one so for me I call that a bonus for it. but like every laptop it has its ups and downs depending on what you need. -
I wouldn't have any reason for bootcamp. I'd use it as my primary computer. General usage, plus editing photos from my DSLR. Lightroom, Photoshop etc...
Nothing professional. Just personal use. Debating whether or not to buy the apple care as well. -
June is definitely too far away. Guess this will be my new rig.

I bought one last fall for our family to use on trips and my son is the main user now. I bought another one in December to replace/augment my 2008 17 inch MBP. I absolutely love this system.
Apple's waiting on Intel for quad-core Broadwell i7 mobile chips. So I'd look more to when Intel is shipping these things to determine when Apple will upgrade the 15 incher. -
Well I bought it! I'm writing this from my new 15" MBPr! I went with the above mentioned specs. Also bought the three years of AppleCare. So far so good! Thanks guys!

I've had mine for only 5 months and I thought that I'd get jaded pretty fast (used to the technology and expect everything else to run like it) but I'm still regularly amazed at how well this thing gets the job done.

I have that exact system that you're talking about I'm going to sell mine this weekend, I'll be selling it for probably 1500 when I list it. Even though I listed mine as 2013 it was December of 2013.

Any recommendations for cases for this laptop? Any brands to check out?
-
Stay AWAY from Unibody Cases, although in theory they may seem to be good and effective the additional weight over time will break your hinges. Go with a Thule Case.
-
x2, nothing worse than trashing your hinges

Just a quick update. Best computer I've ever owned. If you're on the fence, but have the funds, go for it! I've had Lenovo and Asus and Dell over the years. Never a Macbook. This is by far my favorite computer so far!
Now I see why it's worth the premium.

Glad you like it! I got a sleeve made by incase that's soft inside, gelly outside that I keep it in.
