Im new to the MacBook Pro but installed Windows XP with Bootcamp and so far have been very happy with the performance Im getting. I had tried it with VM before and didnt like the way it worked.
The only problem that I have found so far is playing DVDs in this configuration. I get message that I am missing Codecs. I have tried Real Player and Windows Media Player with the same problem. I have done a search but not really found an answer to this problem. I saw VLC mentioned and have downloaded it but wanted to ask this question before I proceeded to try it.
Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

May I ask why you are not playing DVD's in Mac OS X environment?
If you are, does it work fine? -
Yes the DVDs play fine with Leopard.
-
Well there's your problem! Get Media Player Classic and a decent codec pack like CCCP. Windows Media Player can hardly play anything (even with extra codec packs installed).
www.free-codecs.com
On the OSX end, I would recommend MPlayer, Quicktime (with Perian installed), and OSXBMC -
VLC is definitely the answer to everyone's prayers, well almost. It generally plays most codecs however it will not play within the browser but it's a very good media player.
-
I will try the codecs the other poster mentioned and then VLC.
If worse comes to worse there is always the Leopard operating system so it is not a big deal.
Thanks -
I hope you didn't put Windows on your Mac just to play DVDs... The Mac's DVD player is actually really good.
The only reason I would use Win for DVD playback would be to install PowerDVD and play movies outside my region... -
No not at all. In fact it is not even a big priority. Yes the Mac DVD Player is great. WOuld be great if I could install it over to the Windows side.
Right now if Im using Windows I have to turn computer off and then reboot back to Leopard.
Does anyone know if that will be a Apple download in the future the Mac DVD player onto WIndows. They have already done it with Safari etc. -
Most likely when WinDVD makes it to the Mac OS.
There really isn't a reason for Apple to make the DVD Player app for Windows. No jokes but Apple is not going to port ALL of their apps to Windows, if so they would be giving you more of a reason to stay on Windows. The Mac OS is first and foremost and being able to install Windows is just an extra benefit.
Don't forget Microsoft pulled support for 2 very important apps from the Mac that we actually needed.
I don't know if you are truly using your Mac as a "Mac" but it doesn't sound like it.

which ones? just curious.
you will need to buy powerdvd for windows for the best results (if you have a macbook pro), or use vlc.
also, this is a windows xp issue, not a mac or apple issue. the fact that you are running windows via bootcamp is unrelated. -
Watch out... the OS police are gonna get you!
That said, if your issue is purely with Windows and Windows software, I would suggest posting it in the Windows forum. -
Swarmer, honestly gimme a break this once. So many people come to this forum and say the rudest things and totally get off topic just annoy the forum, if you look at most of my posts I generally help a lot of people (although I would like my rep power to be higher
) but if I don't say something you don't like please don't slam me for it. Many people have said much worst.

Windows Media Player and I.E.
Of course you can use Flip4Mac or Perian but MS pulled the plug on us right when WMP was the media player of choice for a lot of important websites including Cnet. Thankfully Flash booted them out.
They did the same thing with I.E. Right when many websites required I.E. Microsoft pulled the plug on the Mac just because Apple came out with Safari and MS knew Safari was not the answer to those I.E. only websites. But things are much better now. Microsoft's tactics to kill off the Mac have certainly burned them wear they sit.

No Im using it as a Computer. Having Windows and Leopard on the same computer gives me a chance to learn the Mac OS. The DVD player is just a minor little thing that I would rarely use on a computer anyway.
-
Actually this doesnt belong in the Windows forum It has to do with installing Windows onto a Macbook Pro using Bootcamp. Im asking on this forum because chances are people who have done this have had the same problems.
This is what forums are for

it really does belong in the windows forum. you may not know it, but this is actually a windows issue, and is unrelated to bootcamp or mac. -
Anyway problem solved VLC works great.
