guys, i just received my dell u2311 monitor but I am having trouble connecting it to my mbp. I bought miniDP->HDMI adapter + HDMI to DP cable but the notebook does not recognize the monitor. What can be the cause?

The first thing I would do is check to make sure the mini displayport to HDMI cable you purchased works. Then I would check to see if your HDMI to displayport cable works with another device. That way you know the issue won't be related to the cables you purchased but rather a setting on your display/MBP.
I had issues this morning connecting my 13" MBP to my Dell monitor at work with a 3rd party mini displayport to VGA adapter. The "trick" I used is that I plugged the adapter in (which was connected to my monitor) while my MBP was running. Mac OS X detected the additional display automatically. For whatever reason, it would not work if I plugged everything in before waking my MBP as Mac OS X would not detect the second display. I still get issues when I close my MBP's lid in that the computer goes to sleep (instead of staying on as I have an external keyboard and mouse) but it is better than what was happening earlier.
As a last resort, you could always buy a 6 ft (male) displayport to (male) mini displayport cable for ~$8 if it ever came down to that. -
why would you convert to HDMI then back to DP? There are mini-DP to full size DP cables out there.

I use the following cable to connect my early-2009 15" MBP to my Dell U2311H monitor successfully:
For only $3.92 each when QTY 50+ purchased - 6ft 32AWG DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort Cable - White | DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort Cables
Good luck. -
I agree, stick with Mini DP and do not convert if possible?
