So I really don't like iMovie 7 or 6 (I have both) and I really liked windows movie maker when I had a PC so I was wondering if there is a movie maker alternative (similar application) which I can download on the Mac OS. I could just install XP via Boot Camp but I prefer not restarting to boot Windows and I dont have the money for VMWare or Parallels right now so Id just really like to know if any of you know of an alternative to movie maker that works on a mac. Thanks

Hmm..what's wrong with iMovie 6? Its pretty much the same concept as Windows Movie Maker with a lot more features...

To be honest, you are the first person I have ever heard say they actually like Windows Movie Maker, especially the XP version.

Anyway, there is not much because Apple's iLife apps have been so well received and there is no market for such an app anymore. I would first give iMovie 7 another shot. I just used it to edit some old home videos that I was digitizing and was actually rather pleased with the ease of use. True it does not have the features of iMovie 6, but for those who really don't want to know much about video editing, it is perfect. If you really want more functionality, you could always look at Final Cut Express, although it is rather pricey.

This is my first time that I have heard about this. I think that Mac makes better movie than windows movie maker.

Well, its not really Mac makes better movies than Windows does...its just Windows Movie Maker is really weak, while iMovie is quite good.

its totally a comfort thing. To be honest I liked movie maker as well. I used it alot and got quite good at it.

The latest version in Vista hardly adds anything. Vista has DVD maker as well, but god that thing is buggy and has major problems with some media and some types of drives.

To be honest on the PC side I had just moved to Sony Vegas before I moved to the Mac. Vegas was a great program, probably equal in power to final cut express. I like iMovie now even the new one. I will probably move on to final cut express once I get more comfortable with OS X and imovie.

As others have said it's strange to hear someone liking Movie Maker better than iMovie seeing that Movie Maker was Microsoft's half hearted attempt to copy/catch up to iMovie so they can say Windows includes basic video editing functionality too. My previous schools and some friends have bought a Mac specifically to get iMovie.

Really the video editing options on Mac are iMovie 7 for beginners, then iMovie 6 which has more options, then Final Cut Express, followed by Final Cut Pro/Premiere Pro/and some Avid software for professionals. If you really want to stick with Movie Maker, you could get Parallels or VMWare Fusion which allows you to run Windows in OS X without rebooting. You would be able to access Movie Maker through one of those software along with any other Windows program you want to install. VMWare Fusion might be the better solution for video editing since it has multiprocessor support while Parallels doesn't.

don't do video editing in a virtual machine.

    oh God.

    just don't.

there are instances where a task might take 20 minutes in os x. Do NOT virtualize that task and let it take 3 hours.

anyway, as stated above imove 7 is entry, then final cut express is "prosumer" and final cut studio is professional

skip imovie 6, imovie 7 is easier to deal with and has better integration with iphoto etc. if you really need more power go to final cut.

I think this was a troll thread from the OP. It's always the case when the OP never comes back as anyone can see he hasn't since his first post. Who would say that they didn't like iMovie 6 or 7 and wanted something like Movie Maker.

You might want to consider getting Final Cut Express then, if you're used to Sony Vegas. Final Cut Express is much more powerful than iMovie, but is pretty cheap as well, at $200.
