My 11' 13" MBP gets very hot and noisy instantly since ElCapitan HELP

Please please help me.

At first I thought it was my hd3000 GPU was so out dated it couldnt handle 480p video on youtube in a small window. Then I noticed the fan would go over time. Since ElCapitan its been near maxing out the 4GB of RAM as thats what ElCapitan and Sierra are instructed to do, so Chrome has its helper, Firefox has up to 4 helpers at a time, all choking up the ram, but that doesnt explain why Im getting so hot as my CPU is NOT getting above 10% usage. I only ever have a browser open, no other apps.

Any theories please?

 

They call it ElCrapitan for a reason.

 

The HD 3000 should be able to even handle 1080p no problem.
Your CPU and GPU are the same chip. Also if you're watching a movie then your CPU will get warm, also, in your case, i'd say you simply need to repaste your macbook. Lucky for you your model is really easy to repaste.

 

But it occurs even just web browsing non videos.........

So you think it needs a new thermal paste of the cpu to the contact?

Yes, especially on older systems it causes performance loss. Upgrading to 8GB of RAM might help you a bit though, as will a repaste as Danishblunt suggested.

 

Thanks mate. I just dont see how ram can cause my system too heat up so much. I wish there was a way to turn off this USE ALL THE RAM FOR THE SAKE OF IT, BS that Mac introduced.

Is it possible to go back a few OSX's and if so, which one was just prior to this RAM must be used policy?

Is thermal pasting hard on this system, I presume ifixit has a tear down.

The thing is the battery lasts 45mins, it need $100 on Ram, it need $100 on a battery, and it really need $100 on a HDD. The laptop is prob only worrth $400 to sell. Would selling it and using the $700-800 to buy something else be a better path? The latter unibody MBP 13" machines resolved this heating issue some how.

 

The RAM will not help with heat, but it may improve performance.

Honestly, all of the Macbook Pros have overheating issues by default. Often these can be improved with a repaste, however in my view the ventilation design is inadequate as it does not have a dedicated intake for the fan. This is not at all helped by Apple's fan curves which, in an effort to keep the laptop silent, do not increase the fan speed until it is already over 90 degrees. The old unibody designs can be made to work, but the 2016 model is atrocious for cooling and stands no hope of being improved much.

In my opinion it's not worth spending that much keeping it going. Save your money for a few weeks/months and sell it. Unless you really wan't Mac OS i'd suggest looking at more capable machines - unless you are willing to go for something like an iMac or even an old Mac Pro (pre trashcan) as they have much better designs on the whole. Even the iMac can overheat though, the 2014 5k ones especially.

 

The CPU load is a constant 30%? Really, they design an OS to run at 30% cpu?

 

Haha no I rather have a MS Surface Book 2, but dont have the money for it hehe.

I got fan controller and core 1 is hitting 100 degrees and core 2 is 98-88 degrees. IM NOT DOING ANYTHING U STUPID MAC.

So now Ive placed an ice pad under it for fun bahaha

 

Definately. What kind of laptop are you looking for? Not sure if New Zealand has its own eBay site, but there should be quite a bit on the Australian one.

Id like just a simple system of similar power but more up to date codecs.

I like the Asus UA310 my Mrs got, but its only got an HD520, Id like to be able to play some games. but dam its light and much smaller and much faster with its ssd and 8gb ram. I think there is one with a gtx940m gpu, but out of my price range.

 

Yeah they put more and more bloatware on each update for your OS. This has been done to make people want to buy a new Macbook pro.

Get this one:
ASUS ZenBook Pro UX550VE

It looks like a MBP, just more stylish, has room for a bit gaming, long battery life and overall very decent build quality.

 

Id so love that, but I really want 14" and under and thats about $800 more than my budget :-(
