    Boy it's been a while...

I'm already a successfully-assimilated mac user. Now my friend wants to join. Her HP laptop was giving her a lot of problems. We bought our laptops around the same time and hers keeps having new problems every week, while mine is still good (the HD did crash though around 2 months ago).

She says she wants to go with the older model. I suggested she buys refurbished + uses her student discount (can you do that?).

I just want to know if anyone is aware of any boxing day sales (a Canadian thing... eh?) or a store that is knocking off $50 or $100 from the macbook.

    Thanks

Wait until late January when Apple (and every other business) crunches their holiday numbers and came up short. Prices will be in a free fall.

No, apple wont lower their prices.

Check out the refurb section in the apple online store. I think they just recently added the new macbooks/pros to the lineup: http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/mac?mco=MTE3NjY

The late '08 models are currently sold out but the stock is updated every few days.

The fact is, no one knows what Apple will do. Saying it will or won't lower prices is just speculation and nothing more.

I did check the refurb section, the new MBs weren't there. If anyone has really seen them before in the refurbished section, then i'll just tell my friend to wait until it's back in the line.

The fact is that no one ever knows what anyone will do. But using history as our guide, you will be disappointed - and waiting quite a long time - if you wait for Apple to drop prices on anything.

    From techbargains.com:

I did see a refurb macbook on the apple.ca website. This was the new generation of macbook. It is sold now, though.

Best Buy currently has $50 off the $1399 model so it's $1349 now, but I'm guessing she wants more of a discount.

The best to do is to wait. Over the next few weeks I imagine that apple will be getting a lot more returns, hence more chance to purchase a refurb.

Unfortunately the only consistent Apple sale was before, Black Friday, so my suggestion is to keep a watch on Future Shop and Best Buy prices, they sometimes have Macs for $50, 100 off!

The easiest way to save on a new mac is by using the student discount. I ask my sis to buy me a new MBP. Unfortunatly imma gonna have it only in january since school store had to order it :( and its close for holiday.

Apple releases the iPhone for $600. One year later, it costs $200. I will give Apple one year to crawl on the ground to me. I do not love you anymore Apple.

I'm about to buy a 2.4 unibody MBP. best deal I can find $1770 delivered after mail in rebate from Amazon. If someone else finds a better deal then that let me know. As far as I can tell Amazon has the best Mac price. And on top of that, no sales tax, which could be a lot.

I highly doubt the iPhone will drop below $150 anytime soon, actually. The iPhone Nano seems very likely to happen, so that will probably fill up the $100 or $150 price point, but I doubt the iPhone will go above or below $150-200.

    iphone != macbook.

if you'll recall, the macbooks have been at the same relative price point for the past few years. the mbp is still 1999 and the mb is between 1-1.5k. always have been, always will be.

Not sure if anyone mentioned it yet but Futureshop was/is selling the 2.0ghz Macbook aluminum for 1249.99 which is a good $150 off the regular price.
