I have to stay with PC's. I can't find a external 56K Modem for the 15" MBP.![]()
![]()
Oh well I'll just "borrow" the stores WiFi.![]()
And use my old Dell desktop for dial-up. I live in the country, can't get DSL out at the ranch, but have it in town. I could get satellite but it cost $$$$. I don't have a cell phone.
So I'm going to go ahead and get my MBP in September![]()
![]()
Unless one of you nice people can help me.
Then I really don't know if I want that nasty dial-up touching my MBP. I would hate to slow it down![]()

Any 56k modem that uses an LAN cable to connect to the mac-book will should work and it does not need any software.
I think an "56K LAN Modem router" should work.
EDIT : Any cell reception out there. -
You don't have a cell phone?? I would suggest you invest in one of those first. Get a good 3G smartphone with an unlimited data plan, and move on from there
-
Thanks Tinder
Could you please show me one. I'm really not to familiar with LAN. I know of it but..
Lynn
Nope no cell phone:cry: can't afford the monthly bills. I already have to many to deal with. And I'm looking into buying a MBP *eek*

It`s very difficult to recommend a 56k modem router as it a few years since i used it.
Maybe you should make a specific thread in the Networking and Wireless section asking for an "56K LAN Modem router" , NO USB -
Apple makes a USB modem but it isn't currently showing on the website. You can find it from third party sellers though.
-
Thanks Jervis961
I'll look.
Budding the other reason that I don't have cell phone is that I don't want my sister-n-law calling me to do this and get that. Lazy she is.
I'll do that Tinder.

You don't have to have a cell phone to get wireless with Sprint, Verizon or ATT. The downside is 5gb per month limit with .05 per mb overages. I live in a rural area with only dial up available and use Verizon. had Sprint with unlimited grandfathered but had to switch b/c Sprint doesn't offer coverage here.

according to the manufactures website ( http://www.usr.com/products/modem/modem-product.asp?type=features&sku=USR5637) this USB modem I found at newegg.com is supposed to work with Macs...

myself.. id set up an older computer to run on the modem, then have it shares its internet connection over wifi... so you don't have to have a cable connect to be online. -

It a shame you loose a usb port unless you use a hub.
A 56k LAN modem router , would be better. -
I didn't know that. I guess I better call AT&T since that is the closest tower to the ranch. My brother has an Iphone and it works great here.
Thanks doh123
I'll talk to you about how to do that. I do have my Dell hooked up, But I also use it what that be a problem?
Lynn -
A 3G dongle would give you much better speeds, although I'm not familiar with US pricing on those things (in the UK you can get the dongle free and pay per MB or get a monthly contract). -
I'll call AT&T and find out.
Thanks for everyone's help

Will this help
http://www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer/ -
Thanks Tinderbox
I know AT&T covers where I live, but what is bothering me/I don't understand is that it seems I need to have a cell phone. I can't find anything about just wireless internet connection without a cell phone. I think the brain cells that would help me clearfiy this has died
Lynn -
they have USB connections for just data plans...
Like these here -
Those things are expensive..but if I want no dial up I guess I would pay it
Question (Ok I really don't know anything about Wifi) We are about 4.5 miles from the tower. I can see it from where I live. Would that be a problem?
My sister-n-law inquired about wireless from local company and they told her that you have to see the tower from the ranch. We couldn'tThe tower is 12 miles from us.
Lynn -
As long as your sister's phone has a signal at your place, then you can get wireless internet (GSM/GPRS, EDGE, or 3G) from the same network your sister's on. However, the stronger the signal you get (which is usually stronger if you're nearer to the tower), the faster the speed.
Also, you might want to check other network providers. Some have more competitive rates when it comes to 3G mobile broadband, and some might be able to give you a stronger signal than AT&T. -
Lynn, you can't afford the monthly payments for a cell phone, but you can to drop a lot of money for a Mac? I don't get it.
-
try pay as you go.... -
Just do as my family wants me to: Pay bills and have a boring unhappy life.
Lynn
EDIT:: I have my reasons why I don't want a cell phone.
10 My sister-n-law would call me: for this and that, do this for me. I don't want to become her slave--oh wait I all ready am
NOOO Don't tell me that..
