an update on the situation. I cannot select the hard drive that is installed anymore. i installed lion on a USB so i could try and get into the disk repair on the full OS and still no joy. I cannot repartition, erase or mount this hard drive anymore.

Main thought is HD is shot and i need to replace it. Am i correct in this assumption?

Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated!

sounds like the drive is shot, I've seen this a number of times on some of my kit.

Best thing to do is use another drive to verify that, I have also had those issues when my EFI firmware went crazy but it normally affected the USB drives as well.

    which specific model/year is it?

It was the hard drive, caught Amazon with a sale on a toshiba 1tb drive for $48 and made a boot USB. Got it knocked out and my friend is happy!

I feel like Macbooks break HDDs almost all the time, especially non SSD drives. I say this because the Macbooks run those Hard drives non stop and they get hot, as people rarely shut off their systems so you can imagine that the disk will just spin and spin and spin and spin until it ultimately breaks.

My recommendation would be not to save a few bucks on a HDD, that is bound to break again in a few years/months but to changeup to an SSD. The investment of getting an SSD will pay huge dividends in both boot times and reliability. Of course if you don't care about your data and doing a reinstall over again then I guess saving cash is an option. But I would imagine that most of the Mac Community would advise you to upgrade or switch out to an SSD especially considering how cheap they are today at the 2.5" form factor. I'm actually surprised I'm the first person in here to be saying this....

    my 2 cents....

No, it's because they use the cheapest samsung IC in the SSD's and RAM they install in thier products, it fails because they started to use garbage since 2012, since Samsung made some agreement with them for cheap IC overstock when they couldn't double the density that year without facing some issues. If anyone was reading tech news back in the day, there was this year where they had a **** ton of extra stock IC, thats when markets were flooded with insane number of brands of USD sticks and cheap SSD's and hybrid drivers, and Mac all started using SSD's. Ever notice Mac's always have the smaller RAM versions of graphics cards ? this is because they use less dense/older IC NAND for their RAM, it's half the price and who would know better, since they make sure - just like ASUS - that you can only get parts and service from them. (Least they try, they really only get those who do not know better)
