So apparently Norton released a new version of their so called "antivirus software". For those of you who are Norton fans let me tell you that it's finally in universal binary! Ok, so I'm not particularly in love with their new UI (doesn't look Apple enough to me) and don't plan on buying it with my mac when I get it in January since I've had nothing but troubles with the Windows version. I would recommend Intego VirusBarrier X4 if you really feel the need for real time protection. For the rest of us, I think that occasionally using ClamXav is enough.

Heehee, the UI is pretty nice (if it was in Windows ;)).

No antivirus for me for now. I'd say these things do more trouble than they solve (which really is nothing right now, as there is no major virus targeting Macs out in the wild right now).

None for me, thank you. 10+ years of using Macs and ZERO infections so far. I use McAfee Enterprise in Windows only because it's FREE from my University.

I don't actually think it was made to protect your mac from viruses. It probably stop viruses from getting to other windows' pcs through your mac's network :p

Yeah, my grade school only had Macs. No Windows PCs at all. Anyways, that was the beginning.

Here is the important information from Ars Technica's article -

Wow. I don't even get viruses on Windows, much less on Mac. I'm actually seriously considering switching back to OS X now as the primary OS on my iMac, since I have no more need to game on it (I got a 360 for all new games, and my W7S can handle all of my older games acceptably well)....Hmm....Its pretty good to think about. Though, if I had thought of this beforehand, I might not have bought Leopard. Oh well, its a new OS anyways.

Hrm, so when the virus market finally opens up for OSX, Norton is poised to be the first mover in this new market (insofar as clam and intego aren't really well-known). That's kind of a depressing thought. It would suck to be forced to use Norton (or even clam or intego). :(

Well if Mac OS gets popular enough that real viruses are made for it I am surely not going to use Norton ...... On windows it is quite useless and you have to pay for its uselessness too :(

Kaspersky for Mac please, when Macs finally do get viruses ;). Norton would be horrible.

Yea, but if you recall, the first few builds of Kaspersky up until version 6 were extremely slow and bulky - on par with Norton, although still quite effective. Hopefully they won't go through such a slow curve for the Mac as well.

I do not have windows on my mac either, though I can install windows on my mac. I can do everything that windows can finish using just my leopard OS. Besides, it is much faster! I have C2D 2.2Ghz, 2G memory, 15 inch Macbook Pro.

I tried a demo of the Intego full product (virus, spam, firewall) and promptly got my first and only kernel panic. I immediately trashed that puppy and am now without any protection other than the Mac firewall. So far so good...fingers crossed...

I downloaded clamxav and have the dmg sitting in my downloads folder. It's only 20 meg. I may decide to install it. At least I have it in the event of an outbreak. OS-X is *nix based and Apple left some well known holes in the OS armor. It's only a matter of time before some exploits are floating around.

For now, I will keep my firewall running. I really wish the Apple firewall was 2-way and would only allow outgoing connections I specifically authorize. That was one aspect of zonealarm on windows that I liked. When I eventually decide to allow A/V software to run on my Macbook, I'll start with clamxav.

    No thanks Norton.
I think the best thing at this point and time for OS X is to run behind a hardware SPI firewall as well as Apple's software firewall. Add a little common sense and caution and you'll be safe most of the time. Oh, and back up! If your really paranoid slap on clamxav.

It wouldn't surprise me one bit if the first proper virus for the Mac was secretly developed and let loose by the very companies who then make profit from selling the software to defend against them :(

Wouldn't rule it out ;). Its like the conspiracy theories of oil companies starting shortages or encouraging wars to bump up the price of oil, right?

I just checked the Leopard Firewall and it does allow the user to set it for 2 way or one way. Are you referring to something specific that's it doesn't do?

Yeah. Those "proof-of-concept" viruses are just meant to scare folks, and I could see Norton creating a worm. They do hire former virus writers (when they get out of prison).
