Been looking around the web but, does anyone have a good idea when the new 17" macbook pro is coming out? I heard this November.
Also, wondering if it will come with the 9600M GT graphics card or maybe something better.

I was planning on getting a new Sager 8660 laptop with a nice 9800M GTS graphics card which i think has a lot better peformance for gaming (WoW, Crysis, FarCry2, etc..) then the Mac's 9600M GT.. Or maybe Apple has put a little be more power into their 9600M GT card, not sure how it compares to a newer windows laptop graphics.

    thanks
    Takk

and i know, you don't just buy a laptop based on the graphics card :) i own an iMac and do enjoy the features it offers so, that's why i might lean towards apple for my next laptop vs. a windows based one.

The 9800m GTS will likely DESTROY a MBP 17" in gaming..

Listen, don't buy the laptop with gaming as a primary priority. Otherwise, you're setting yourself up for disappointment. I can very much relate in that I am selling an Alienware m15x (8800mGTX) and just switched over to a macbook pro (late 2008). I was unhappy with Microsoft Windows, unhappy with the build quality of virtually all notebook pc's that I've come across, and unhappy with most pc manufacturers support and customer service. At the same time, I am a gamer so the 9600mGT was naturally a concern. In the end, I think you can't have it all with a computer. The vast benefits to the Mac OS combined with the sheer elegance of the machine and wonderful support by Apple has completely won me over. Do I game on the laptop? Yes, I game on a Vista partition using bootcamp but it's a secondary benefit and I made the sacrifice in my mind and was willing to accept the fact that I won't be playing a lot of bleeding edge games on the machine and that's o.k. with me. There are plenty of older titles out there to fill my downtime. It's an even bigger issue with me because I run the computer on an external 1920x1200 display and enjoy my games in native resolution which takes Crysis and some of those games right off my list of potentials. ;) But hey, I don't mind... The benefits far outweigh the cons. There is a lot of truth to people that say... If you want a gaming computer, then build your own gaming pc desktop. I can definitely notice switching from a pc that scored 10,000 3dmark06 to one that now scores 5,200 but it runs all the games I care about (Guild Wars, Assassin's Creed, NWN2, Warhammer, HL2) and in 1920x1200 no less so I really don't have any big complaints.

Long story short, if gaming is your main priority and what you will be spending most of your time doing, then stick with a gaming notebook. I think you need more reasons than that to go with Apple.

groove75 ... in regard to build quality have you ever felt a Sager? based of a Clevo shell? Hard as a rock.. Alienware is generally a computer embarrassment in regards to build quality ever since they started with their own chassis and with the Arima Chassis.

The 9800m GTS will kill the 9600m GT, at 160-180% the speed of the 9600m GT, the rest of the pros and cons are more obvious, and is ultimately for you to decide. Just don't expect to play crysis 2 on the macbook pro for the reason why it will be good for :p

He could play it if he likes his laptop displaying the load screen menu as an art piece frozen in time XD

Dont know about the graphics card, and dont really care since I'm not a gamer. But I AM looking forward to a replacement for my current 17" MBP. Hopefully they will upgrade it and I can pick up an early Christmas present

4 things the new 17" should have is.
    - Better GPU. Hands down the GPU has been MBP's biggest downfall, Apple need to beef this up.
    - Bring back a proper DVI port. Or better yet use an HDMI port. Why go out and reinvent the wheel, and then expect customers to shell out more MONEY for a proprietary display port. (Quit bending us over the barrel here Stevo)
    - MORE FREAKING USB ports. ***Hello is this thing on.***
    - Last but not least. Give us Blu Ray support. Not every one in the world lives where ultra high speed internet is readily available. But we all still love High Def movies. They would look amazing on the 17" 1920x1200 res screen.

If Apple can't seem to get their DOO DOO together and start offering people what they want, and not want they want to sell. I think I will have to look at the Sager also. In this round of MBP's I really don't think Apple has brought anything NEW to the Table. Just some regurgitated and redressed DEJA VU. So much for Innovation. Yes the Brick is something new, BUT the rest isn't.

Blu-ray drive would be wonderful; hell I'd replace my iMac with a 24" if they offered it with BR drive
