if it's anything like my 9600M GT, it can't. most games you'll have to drop the resolution.

tbh, it makes me feel like they're starting to care less and less about their computer market.
considering how well their mobile products are selling, I can't blame them. -
Man this whole discussion of *not* being able to game makes me worry about being able to model/do 3D stuff... which makes me worry about whether I should really be dropping $2500 on a laptop that can't do what I need it to do....
Damnit Apple. -
I was able to model okay with my 9600M GT.
worst case: just wait until someone who cares about our kinds of needs (gpu perforance) writes a review. -
Yeah I am anxiously awaiting a review from a designer/3D modeler... I think the Processor upgrade will help greatly in terms of having a MBP be viable for modeling, instead of using a quad core desktop... of course there will be some trade-off but, that's to be expected when you want to use a laptop with another monitor 100% of the time (as is the case with me... just love the convenience far too much).

If you stop buying from Apple maybe they will change their acts but if you continue they are likely to do so as well. -

I really wanted to hop back onto the Macbook Pro as my main machine again but I can't justify the Apple tax this gen. It's one thing paying a few hundred dollars more for a premium product, but paying double for half the performance? I can't do that XD
Maybe I'll stick with my Asus G73 order and pick up a 13" MBP once another refresh hits. -
It's nice having one notebook for everything. the new mbp is no gamers rig, but for playing Mass Effect 2 maxed at native res it should be fine. That's the only game I'll be playing regularly for the next couple of years (such was the case with ME1).
Heck, when I saw how well the 9600m GT played ME2 I switched from a M17x to a MBP. Ironically, I traded back my M17x to the guy who took my MBP in exchange for it.
So the 330m is not bad at all vs the 9600m GT.
32 to 48 shader cores
smaller/cooler manufacturing process
faster clocks
should be comparable to a RADEON 5650 IMO. -

I have not reviewed anything with a 330m or Quadro equiv (NVS 5100). The 35 watt tdp is letdown versus about 20 for the 5650. But it should be in the 6500-7000 3dmark06 range.
this has an i7 but its a good indicator (7,300 points):
http://www.notebookinfo.de/tests/test-asus-m60j-jx019v-mit-der-kraft-der-vier-herzen/57/ -
3dmark06 on my MBP 17" i7 ..... 5791. under the 6100 estimated by notebook check for the stock 330 1GB
-
Maybe low clocks? What does GPU-Z say?
http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/ -
laptops in 2008 were getting better than those scores.

but it's not a laptop for gaming. just have to keep reminding myself of that. -
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html
240 and 330 are pretty much identical chips #54 and #57 on the list.
9600m is a tiny bit further down and was reated at a 3Dmark of roughly 5000
im guessing underclocked some or a bottleneck somewhere on the switching MUX. -
macworld shows the 320m in the new MBP 13" to be MUCH faster than the 9400M used before...
http://www.macworld.com/article/147071/2010/04/13inch_macbookpro_benchmarks.html?lsrc=top_1
the new entry level MBP doubled the frame rate from the previous entry level MBP on Call of Duty 4 -
yes, but the 9400 is horribly slow compared to any modern chip thats why its even getting passed up for netbooks now in favor of the ION2
1300 for the 9400m stock config ... and the 320 at roughly 3100, so well over twice the speed just by peeking at stock benchmrkings.
so a doubled framerate should be expected -
Yeah, I was expecting the 320M to be a great little integrated chip, and it seems like it is. To be honest, I think the 13" MBP is the best value of the new bunch - really not too bad as Macs go. Sure, it still has a Core 2 Duo, but it's a pretty fast one at that, and that chip is great for an IGP - pretty much on the same level as the discrete 310M, from what I gather.
For comparison, the U30JC is very similar in specs to the MBP, and it's $900; $300 cheaper, but as Apple's premiums go $300 isn't too bad. -
that has nothing to do with anything here really though... but the 320m is much faster than the 9400M previously used... -
The reason netbooks are switching to ION 2 is pretty much the same as the main reason the 13" MBP is on C2D - Intel is locking Nvidia out of making chipsets for its new CPUs.
-
they finally fixed the ION2 driver issue .... its now a whole whopping 12% faster than the 9400M
I will admit the 9400 was a great chip for its time though. -
-
Any more tests/examples of performance out of the 330M Card in the 512MB version in these new MBP's?
Besides the few hundred dollars extra I would spend, that is really the only thing holding me back from buying a shiny new 17"...
(I've been looking at HP Envy 15's, Sony Vaio F Series, and an MSI GX640 but... I wouldn't mind the MBP one bit if I was confident the GPU would be okay for Maya/Photoshop work).
Thanks. -
Intel wants to force a chipset sale with every CPU sold... -
its quite possible Nvid dropped the ball all on their own too as normally intel is quite good about licencing tech except for its base X86 in which only AMD and VIA currently have licence to build CPU's based off their tech -

First I traded my MBP for an M17x (Nov)
Then I traded my M17x for the very same MBP (last week)
The M17x was fun, but it was also a lot of trouble. There were some issues that consumed time and which are not yet resolved by Dell - and might never be.
I finished a ton of games on it but most of my time on the PC is spent surfing and writing - the M17x is a portable desktop. It's not practical to lug around. As long as my RPGs play well on the Mac I am a happy camper.
My M17x was listed for sale in a variety of places and prices - no one made a single serious offer. I can sell my MBP for about the same amount in a couple of days.
And while Windows 7 is a nice improvement over XP, I still prefer OSX buy a huge margin. -
yeah, i heard that there were issues like high audio latency on the m17x. I think Os X has a lot of way to go. The aero effect in windows is awesome but concerning stability, os x wins. However, the laptop heats too much while watching flash videos. We need better flash support. Do you hear that Adobe???

I was using aperture at the store on a Mac Mini attached to some generic 1920x1200 display and it actually crashed twice within an hour or so.
Was that normal? I was really surprised when it happened since I keep hearing about stability and whatnot. Was the Mini's components just stressed too much? -
you never know what people have done to display models.... they usually won't run as good as a personally owned and taken care of machine.
not much else I can guess without knowing the details of the crash. -
Yea the display models we have at bestbuy are special at best. Even with our software on them to keep crap away they still do some crazy things. (Both our PCs and Apples).
