It's true!!! New Mac pros!
Processor upgrades, standard is quad core now.
Improved graphics, hard drive speeds, more ram now, you name it. See for yourself.

Yeaps! Its also on Apple's front page right now.
I'd say this is good news, it means there's quite a lot to talk about at Macworld, or at least they want to focus on the consumer end for Macworld and to get the Mac Pro out of the way first! -
Yes I noticed. Finally, something that can max out Crysis, lol.

That's only if you can afford such a thing. I just took a look at it now on the Apple website. It's still a cheese grater. -
Well, it looks cool like that! They didn't change the outsides, just added new hardware options.
-
Yes, that's what I call it too, the Mac cheese grater
.
Its definitely expensive...its not the typical gaming system. Its more a video-editing, professional developer's system. That's why I still support the idea of a Mac desktop tower for the media/consumer market...something that is powerful and upgradeable, a full-sized desktop tower without being a Mac Pro (such as, no need to support up to 32 GB of RAM). -
Yup. Get a consumer level system. Unless your doing protein folding, SETI, hard core video work, mid level server work, or something of the kind, you don't need this.
-
iMac Pro. Apple, are you listening?
-
Nah... Just call it the Mac
-
Now that these are out, I'm getting the old dual 2.66 Mac Pro next week
I'd still love one of these new ones though. 8 cores.... DAMN!
Shame Distributed.net isn't still running projects, I'd be curious to see how this murdered packets. -
Meh, 8 Cores is totally, and utterly useless to the average person anyway. Maybe if you like to render CG shows or films... 8 cores would be of some use

They should have added Blu Ray or HD DVD drives, or added dual nvidia 8800 gt cards. Then again, I cannot complai n though. The new upgrade is still better than nothing!
-
Has anyone actually tried grating cheese on this thing?
-
Neat, came out to be: $23,932.95 w/ academic discount.

Yea, they should give us a dual HD-DVD / Blu-ray setup, with some more GPU options.
And, where are the flashy Alienware-esque lights!? -
Sounds like something to try and to YouTube!
And then, to melt the cheese on the bottom of a MacBook notebook too, eh?
No problem, taelrak. You'll be receiving your system in a week or two. In the meantime, don't worry about the fact that your bank account is suddenly missing $24'000, its nothing
.

I'll bring a block with me tomorrow... one question.... havarti or cheddar?

I wonder how they could get 15,000 rpm harddrives? Fastest I know of is only the western digital 10,000 rpm harddrives.
-
I'm wondering how they got 300GB 15,000 RPM drives. They've had them in smaller sizes for 7 or 8 years now. I didn't know there was a 300GB drive though!
I bet that thing SCREAMS. (And is probably louder than my car) -
awesome update!, cool that they still offer it in just quad core as well, and there are FINALLY good GPU choices, it is about time, and the early switch to Penryn is great.
now I am just waiting for the new cinema displays. -
They are SCSI drives. More accurately, the new SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) interfaces.
I don't know much about them... -
Sneaky_Chopsticks Notebook Deity
How new is the SAS thing? How well do you think it will compete with the SSD drives?
What kind of updates do you guys think they will have on Cinema displays?
-
SAS has been around for at least a year. However SSD is a kind of drive, while SAS is an interface, so eventually there will be SSD drives running on SAS (And SATAII).
As for the monitors... They'll be expensive. How's that for an answer? -
SAS drives are replacement for SCSI. They're used for real servers. Basically you will not see those in any consumer level device, as you would never see SCSI in a consumer level drive.
They're built to be faster, more reliable and operate 24/7.

Not sure if my info is accurate, I'm going by the fact that it's supposed to replace the older SCSI interface. :-/ -
Sneaky_Chopsticks Notebook Deity
so, it's pretty much a super fast HDD that ordinary users don't need.
-
Yeah, pretty much. And super expensive.
On the other hand, this is also the largest SAS drive I've seen. Generally any SCSI type drives are MUCH smaller than consumer drivers.
New Mac Pros!!
