I am picking up a new 13" MacBook Pro this weekend and I am curious if when you have an SD card in the reader slot if it is flush or sticks out a bit? If it is flush I would love to use it as a Time Machine back up drive for all my work documents, and not have to deal with an external drive. Has anyone who has gotten theirs in tried this?

    Thanks

Isn't it press to release? In which case it can't sit flush but I could be wrong.

I am not sure if it is press to release or pull out or what. :( It is just confusing because I see so many people with different statements on whether or not it is flush so I was wanting to hear it from someone with personal experience whether it is or before going and buying an SD card.

Do you think you could post a picture? I am just worried because I am constantly moving around from place to place with my laptop and I don't want it to hang on something and cause damage to the card itself or the internals of the notebook.

Yeah i'm also wondering the same. I would much rather it be push-to-release and sit flush with the machine.

Based on the tear down by ifixit it looks like it sticks out quite a lot. Pic

while the slot itself is built in, and therefore flush with the machine, an inserted SD card is not.

you will need to remove SD cards before transport

I didn't think you could use SD as a Time Machine device....

The SD card will not be flush with the Macbook Pro. There will be also no locking mechanism either. I was playing with one today at the lab. It sticks out just a little bit so to remove all you have to do is just pull it out. But no it will not be flush.

Yea - I just brought one home tonight and was disappointed on how much it sticks out - you can forget transporting the machine with a card in it.

It's made so that you can just pull it out with your fingers, as far as I can tell. :)

What does it matter if its flush? Its not like you need to leave it in 24/7 for time machine. Plus I just do not think thats a good idea. It could lost easily in travel. Plus Im not sure which card your getting but im not sure if it would even work with an SD card. Let alone the issue of size (GB).

Well I did want to leave it in 24/7 since it would be my back up. If it was flush I wouldn't have worried too much about it coming out. And it should work fine especially if you can boot from it. If nothing else there are small quick fixes to allow time machine to use pretty much anything you want. And capacity wouldn't really worry me as all I would be backing up is my documents for work and such, nothing large.
