what's the "major" thing here?
i see is:
2.4ghz (.2ghz more?)
same ram
same hdd
what am i missing?
what i expected:
backlit keyboard (cmon not hard to do)
led screen
at least one more usb
multi-touch
and alluminum design

-
Yeah, then you have a macbook pro
-
Peryn platform is the major thing. It is a small update, but an update nevertheless.
-
The only one of those that is truly plausible is the LED screen. They aren't going to do multi-touch, aluminum, and a backlit keyboard. It is like dedicated graphics, not gonna happen. That is what the Pro models are for.
-
While an aluminum chassis would have been great (because of the weight savings), I would have expected at least the LED screen...after all Jobs promised the move to LEDs across the board.
I would buy one tomorrow if they had done that (altough I would love a lighter MB) -
-
Pretty sure that Apple has said they're committed to bringing LED backlit screens to all the lines, but I think it's not quite in the price range for a $1300 computer right now (at least that's what they'd tell you). But, yea, I don't expect seeing aluminum or multitouch anytime soon on a MacBook, since that's a selling point for the MBP.
-
I think the major thing is that nobody expected Apple to update the MacBook for a while, and they did. It's not a huge update, but it will keep the MacBook fresh for another 6-8 months.
And cashmonee hit it dead nuts. Out of all the items you listed, the LED backlight is the only plausible thing for the low end Mac laptop line.
It's hard to keep everybody happy though. Everybody complains that Apple doesn't update products, and when they do it is never enough -
they should've thrown in a 7200rpm as basic hard drive..
is it hgard to replace the hard drice on a mbp? -
-
i doubt they will add multitouch and backlit and led on macbook because of it's price and the macbook air is not going to sell very well because if it has same specs but better even air is thinner people will go for the macbook.
-
I'm sure the truly new model will come out sometime this summer.
-
Frankly, I'm even surprised the MacBook was updated at all. I mean, yeah, there were indications of it, but from a spectator's point of view, update from November seemed too early to calculate a February update. I guess another reason why it was such a small update.
-
So... why isn't it plausible for Apple to implement multi-touch into the Macbook?
If the Air has it... why wouldn't the Macbook as well? -

True, maybe eventually we'll see it?
Who knows.

Was the numeric keyboard/second 'enter' key already eliminated in the previous update, or is that new as well?
I think it's a good idea to have another Alt key on the right side.
And it's a *shame* that the base model still ships with a combo drive! -
Yeah, I think Apple should have implemented multi-touch and LED-backlit screens to the MacBook as well...its obvious they're lagging the MacBook down behind the "professional" lines and I don't think that's the right way to go.
-
I think that they'll add more features into the next update, as this one was just a processor upgrade really to keep up with current hardware.
I think Apple wanted to focus their attention for this update into the Pro because;
People expected the Pro to get updated
The Pro should get new options before the MacBook and have them for a short while to indicate it's a better laptop
They still want to maximise profits on their lower end model
Just looking at the MacBook Pro's updates and you can see that Apple is listening to the users and adding features that they want. I'm sure by the end of the year, they will have revamped the laptops again with more features and newer processors.
So if a backlit keyboard is important to you, get the MacBook Pro or get a Toughbook. (My backlit keyboard is 6 years old and is water proof, so)

oh one more thing.
it has 3 mb L2 Chache now. -
6mb shared if it is 2.5ghz cpu
New Macbook very little update?
