Last year when Tiger was released Apple also released new Macbooks. Is this expected this time with Leopard as well? Anyone know anything about it?
I want to buy a new notebook & well if there is a decent chance new Macbooks will be coming out in October then I'd wait & see or else I wanna get ready to buy another laptop.
In the current Macbook I hate the integrated video card. It's absolutely horrendous. So that + a LED-backlit screen is what I'm really looking at but other upgrades are always welcome.![]()
If this is in the wrong forum please move it to the appropriate one.
-
Its possible. So far the only update that is anticipated for the MacBook would be one nearing October for the Leopard launch. However, no one knows if they will continue to use integrated graphics and they may not adopt LED-backlighting on the MacBook yet.
I'm guessing that they'll continue to use integrated graphics on the MacBook, unfortunately. They want more differentiation between the MacBook and the MacBook Pro, and I'm afraid Apple will want to keep a distance between the two models as they are totally different in price. -
Do you think there will be an update to the MBP line as well in October? If so what do you think it will be?
-
Doubt it. They just updated the MBP line a few weeks ago, so another one this soon is unlikely.
-
Here we go again. It was a nice few weeks after the MBP came out.
Look, buy it when you need it. Whatever update they may come out with won't be so revolutionary that you will want to kick yourself. -
Exactly...probably wouldn't be one those things you would lose sleep over (I hope).
-
I was kind of hoping that there would be a MBP update in October with SSD hard drives.

How are they going to pull off the .5" MacBook? I hope they do. It would be amazing!
-Super slim optical drive and hard drive
-LED display
What other features would it need to have to meet these specs? -
A radical redesign, using maybe the hinted screw-less all-in-one chassis' making it almost impossible to change anything without shipping it off.
Oh, and a prayer. -
I was gonna say pixie dust!
-
Come on, the 0.5" thick rumor can't be true. 2.5" HDs are about 3/8" thick, then you'd have the thickness of the plastic case x2 + the thickness of the screen. It's just not possible. Also, if it were 0.5" thick you wouldn't even be able to plug cables into it. They could probably take it down to .9" from 1.08" but I don't think any more than that. IMO thickness is by far the least important dimension I don't see why it matters

1) Bragging rights
2) Marketing tool -
I think that there is defintely upgrade to leopard, but as far as the hardware is concerned, I do not think that there is a upgrade, unless Intel announced the qrad-core processor
-
Intel X3100 GPU would be ah bit better.
-
I wouldn't be surprised if the Macbooks got upgraded to Santa Rosa (still approx. the same CPU speeds...1.8 GHz and 2.0 GHz max to avoid overlap with MBP), Intel X3100 integrated graphics and 802.11n wifi when Leopard is released. This would keep costs approximately the same but bring the Macbook in line with the latest series of hardware.
Wishlist upgrades would be LED screen and 2gb ram standard (doubtful). -
No HDMI or HD DVD drives
?
-
I'm hoping it'll be lighter. I'm STRONGLY considering the Macbook for a 6-month around-the-world travel computer, but the thing is so damn heavy for such a tiny computer. It weighs 5.1 pounds, while most 13" computers are more like 4 pounds. Even it's big prother is only .3 pounds heavier, despite being much bigger. What gives?
I'd really like to wait for this, but I leave in September
-
A .5" Macbook wouldn't do so much for me. It's already a pain to take apart. What I'd love is a 12" pro. Or a 13.3" pro with 1440x900.
-
Werd! I would definitely be excited for a 13.3"/12" MBP with a 8400 G or GS.
-
Hmm...perhaps Apple will be offering LED displays for the Macbook soon...
http://www.electronista.com/articles/07/07/03/kenmos.macbook.leds/ -
A 8400gs on the Macbooks will cripple sales of the Dell M1310... hehe
-
No it wont. The average Dell customer wont realise how crappy the 8400M GS is and the Dell Rep will promise them top 3d performance.
-
The GS is not that bad, it is about as strong as my old ATI 9800 (which i got money back coz the service couldnt repair it
)
Anyway, anything dedicated is nice. But i dun believe apple can stuff in anything dedicated coz their thermal solution is nearly at it's limit. -
Sorry I only understood what you where saying the 2nd time reading. You ment a 8400M GS in the new Macbook would cripple sales of the M1330. I thought you ment that the Dell picking the 8400M GS for the M1330 would cripple their sales since the 8400M GS is hardly an upgrade over the go7400. My bad! -
My bad too.. i din write clearly which the 8400 belongs to. No harm done
-
lets keep the thread alive
-
Even if the Macbook had dedicated graphics, it would still have its cheap plastic casing, be nearly a pound heavier than the M1330, and lack an LED-backlit screen option. In terms of hardware, the M1330 is more like a mini-MBP than a Macbook. Of course, I know that for the die-hard Mac fans, the availabilty of OS X on the Macbook trumps all of the hardware differences.
-
Woah! Tell us how you really feel about the MacBook, chief.
-
LOL... I don't think the Macbook's bad at all... I mean in terms of hardware, I like it better than your typical Acer or HP Pavilion... it's just that the M1330 is in a different class, that's all.
-
A different price class too
You have to look at the costs. Identically specced, the M1330 costs wayyyyy more than the MB. -
Just givin' you crap
-
I do agree that the M1330 is overpriced. Hey it's a Dell, it should be cheaaaap!
-
I think that think Apple need to step things up. They should have updated the MacBook's by now. If i was interested in a MacBook now due to the fact that it is not using the current technology i would not buy one i would wait until they updated or look elsewhere. It is not only the MacBook's that need updating either. The iMac's could have done with a overhaul some time ago also. The Mac Mini's are still even using the CD platform.
I would have love to have bought a Mac this time round but they don't cater for my needs so i cannot get one. I need a semi powerful ultraportable laptop and Apple has obliterated that from their line up.
The MacBook is also more than 1lb heavier than the Dell 1330. The 1330 weighs in at just under 4lbs with a 4 cell battery and it is around 4.2 with a 6 cell battery. I believe that the MacBook is about 5.3lbs. -
You're right they are slacking. Apple could of easily squeezed a MacBook update into their lazy schedule of finishing up Leopard, creating the most revolutionary cell phone ever and the MacBook Pro update. Apparently they have never heard of work ethic or integrity
-
I know that they have been busy with their phone and the MacBook Pro is one classy product but the MacBook and some other computing products seem to have gone a bit wanting.
The phone personally i am not interested in i don't care what phone i use right now lol as long as it has bluetooth and 3G. -
I understand ya.
Hopefully the Mac Book will receive its update this fall. The iPhone is very cool. I went to one of Apple's iPhone training classes to check it out. I would never buy one however
-
I'm betting the whole MBP lineup will see a new, slimmer design. Plus I wouldn't rule out an ultraportable MBP.
-
The iMacs were supposedly pushed back (as with all major updates in any Apple product) because Apple wanted all attention to focus on iPhone...they wanted an excellent launch (and they got it). The iMacs are expected to be significantly upgraded (inside components and outside design) this summer.
The MacBooks were updated in the sense that you got more power for the same price. That happened in May. Its been said that Apple didn't update the MacBook with Santa Rosa because they wanted more differentiation between the MacBook and the higher priced MacBook Pro.
An ultraportable MacBook Pro has been rumoured (and wanted) for a long time. It probably will eventually arrive, but no one knows when. Heck, they rumoured about the iPhone for years.
Apple's been rumoured to have new iMacs and iPods done already, but as I said earlier they're pushing back its release for all attention to focus on iPhone.
Instead of thinking of Apple slacking, you have to think about the way Apple works: they need to keep the media (and public's) attention on everything they do. They could announce ten products at a single event; only two would be talked about by the media. Instead, they would much rather release things over a few months, so just as the media stops talking about the iPhone, "Radical new iMacs arrive!". -
Hey.. I'm not sure if this post is in the right thread or even in the right forum department.. But the thing is, I'm going back to school in August and would love to have a mac by then. but all this rumor and talk-about of a possible MacBook upgrade makes me "confused".. would you guys buy and just look past a MacBook upgrade?? (And I'm going to install Leopard anyways.. so)...
Could you guys please help me here?? :s
Cheers
Sander -
Sander,
Even if an upgrade is going to arrive, its not going to be until October most likely. And that upgrade won't be significant enough for you to go "Aww, mine's is horrible compared to the new one". If there is going to be an update in October, I'd probably expect a speed bump or RAM increase or hard drive increase. Nothing significant like a graphics card addition or a transistion to some other processor
.
-
To be honest, Sam, you brought a kind of "peace of mind" to me with that post.. because you're SO correct.. Especially the "Aww, mine's horrible compared to the new one."
Thanks a lot by the way.. you gave me a kick in the butt, so to say, in my decision, to buy a Mac.. I know it sounds kinda pathetic.. -
It's not pathetic. You are just making sure you are getting the most out of your money.
-
No problem, sander
. Its not pathetic to me...its always the right thing to be more sure before a large investment such as getting a notebook. So unless you really don't need a MacBook right now, or you want Leopard pre-installed, get it now
. Get used to Mac OS X and the way the Mac works so you're all set when school comes around.
-
You got that right
thanks anyway, to both of you..
Off topic.. how long does it generally takes to get used to Mac OSX?? Is two weeks enough??
(Sorry for an off topic question) -
It depends on the user. But the transistion really isn't that hard. I found that these two articles really helped me in my switch to Mac OS X from Windows. You can read them now to better understand how Mac OS X works, even though you don't have your Mac yet.

Great, thanks..
-
Unless they come out with a slimmer, lighter Macbook.
-
So you guys don't think a new model of macbooks will be coming out anytime soon eh?
Ey dudes, sorry to be the one barging in and asking the stupid questions, but I am a total noob when it comes to macs. Anyone care explaining what you mean by Leopard and Tiger? -
Tiger is Macs current operating system. Leopard will be coming out in Fall.
New Macbooks in October?
