Personally I love smaller power adapters, so I think it might be. You could always keep the old one at home and use the new one for travel.

I don't suppose Apple offers the same 1-month free upgrade with those like they do with OSes? :p

I suspect not; although I don't know, it couldn't hurt to call them maybe and say you really want the new one. I've heard of them offering people $100 off their order for other things, so it doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility to get them to send you one or let you exchange it or something.

If you need a second adapter anyway or really want a smaller adapter then yeah it's worth it. However, $85 for an adapter because you don't like the size is a little pricey. I mean the old adapter is not THAT big.

what is the difference between the adapters? when did they announce they had made them smaller?

they aren't big at all as they are right now, they are bigger than the Powerbooks obviously, but Powerbooks weren't packing any power at all, even though they probably are much less efficient in every way.

Why is it ridiculous to replace the current power adapter with the smaller one? I hate large power adapters. The smaller adapter can fit in more pouches in my bag. I remember when I had my vaio sz which was really thin and light, but the power adapter was the size of a brick. Defeats the purpose of having a small notebook. Apple doesn't announce a lot of their products, even accessories.

Yeah, I have to admit, that was probably one of the little things that was a big annoyance for me with my SZ. I loved having this awesome thin and light machine, but it had this clunky power adapter with long thick cords that you had to velcro together.

Sony even makes a "smaller" adapter, but it still isn't that much more elegant.

Personally I really do wish more PC laptop makers would take a cue from the Apple power adapters (just all the little touches; the prongs integrated into the adapter itself, and then the fold-out wings to wrap the cord around).

Yeap, I'm really tempted to dish out the $80 for it ; ;.

Having a brick of a power adapter is quite annoying....

it looks just like the macbook adapter. it is definitely smaller, but i actually don't that the difference isn't that big a deal. i am currently comparing a macbook vs macbook pro adapter. granted, we are all suckers for smaller tech here... we pay extra for apple, but i don't think it is money i could justify spending...

    Anyone ordered via MacMall?

I was just thinking, how can only 85 watts power a laptop? My not very powerful desktop uses a 250 watt power supply and the laptop has to power a screen on top of all the other hardware inside. I know laptop components arn't as power hungry as there desktop counterparts, but still, only 85 watts?

I think the answer is already in your post.

Every component of a laptop is designed to not require nearly as much power as its desktop counterpart; the hard drives, the RAM, the CPU, the optical drives, the GPU, etc.

Also probably worth noting that most desktops don't actually max out what their power supply is capable of.
