I ordered the new 13" macbook pro but when I opened it I noticed there is a small mark/scratch on the aluminium case about 2 inches below the apple logo. The scratch is about 1 inch, it isn't very deep but is noticable.
Do you think apple will accept that it was like this when I recieved it and replace/repair it?
Would I also be able to take it into the apple store that is near by to get it replaced/repaired?
The store is listed as an authorised service provider on the apple website. I paid for applecare if that makes any difference. I also live in the UK.
This is my first mac and I have had no experience of dealing with apples customer support, I have been told that they are very good.

Why not just call them and find out for yourself? Ultimately you'll have to call them anyway, regardless of the information that you get from here.
Apple support *IS* very good! Call them and see!
-
I be calling them tomorrow as the support line is not open today in the UK.

you sure its not dirt or glue?
most of the time, there will be glue splattered around the laptop. annoying huh?
the screen and case, sometime will have some glue.
clean it with warm damp cloth (preferably the one that cleans your glasses with), it comes of pretty easily. -
Apple support alone is worth the premium on their machines.....but I'm coming from being used to calling alienware/dell and they make suicide an option over actually fixing a problem.
-
I did find a small amount of glue on the bottom of the macbook that came off really easy. This is definitely a small scratch of the aluminium case.
I'm glad to see everyone is giving the thumbs up to apples support
.

To be honest, your Apple laptop will scratch. Aluminum is rigid but is a soft metal, and I have just come to accept that it will scratch; it's inevitable. And once you get the first one, the rest don't seem to matter as much.

It shouldn't be a problem. Apple hardware trades on looks above anything else - quality, power, reliability, value, etc so they should at least get that right.
Apple support is generally excellent in terms of consumer service - just as well as you'll be using them often - and I'm pretty certain you'll be able to get it exchanged. -
Yeah but it's brand new, I wouldn't want to buy a new car and have it come with a 5 inch scratch down the side.
-
Seems strange that Apple let a scratched laptop get through quality assurance. Did you buy it from the Apple store or from a dealer? It might have been a demo model or one that had been unpacked previously
-
Was thinking the same thing. I've owned quite a few macbook pros now and every single one was physically perfect (I inspect them very closely). In either case I would return it. I've never scratched any of my macbooks before but I do baby them.

It's been extremely rare - I can't remember the last time I got a pre-UB with a scratch; warped sure, but scratch, no - but I've had two incidents in the past 9 months - both unibodies. I've had other cosmetic issues such as warped unibodies on the 17-inch Crapbooks, but these were definitely scratches.
Let's face it though, far more serious things slip through Apple QC on a regular basis although many might be too zonked on the Apple Reality Distortion Field to realise. In both cases the packaging was pristine and the seals were in place, indicating a new machine. One was exchanged because the scratch was the least of the problems. The other I haven't bothered to replace, and it's been working OK thus far. -
I have spoken to apple and the customer services rep said that he couldn't authorise a replacement until they have seen the scratch. As I have apple care he said I could take it into the apple store nearby and they will exchange it once they have seen it and judged it is worthy of a replacement. I'll have to take it tomorrow after work.
The laptop was definitely new when I received it as it was sealed in it's box and had all the seals inside the box in place.
I think I'm just unlucky when buying expensive items. The Sony TV I bought after Christmas also came with a lovely scratch on it. They did replace it after I complained. -
Happened to me this weekend as well. Bought a new MBP 15". I should have opened the box at the store to make sure everything was fine. I found a scratch on the laptop after coming home. Good thing I didn't open the plastic wrapping. But I had to wait more than 14 hrs since the store was closed for the day. The next day, I went to get the laptop exchanged. They got me a new one and asked me to wait to open the box till the exchange process is complete i.e. get a new receipt.
The 2nd one had another scratch. So the sales guy goes and get me another laptop. This laptop was fine but the sales guy noticed that by mistake he got me the wrong model #. So he got me another laptop, finally everything was perfect.
I know the laptops might get scratched later on but we should receive an item in perfect condition since we paying for it. -
I took my macbook into the apple store today. The guy saw the scratch and said that it needs to be replaced but that he couldn't do it as I had bought it off the apple online store. He said he doesn't understand why apple sent me to the store and they would have to deal with it.
I'll have to ring them again when I get home. -
You didn't do the Shrek Cat Eyes, did you.
Oh well. Good luck with the replacement. Just hope there's nothing else wrong when you get a scratchless one.
