Intego reporting new OS X trojan horse in the wild
-
Who'd be stupid enought to install it? That's like downloading and installing a dialer program (or kazaa) on windows.
-
Exactly. Here is a clue, don't install software from a porn site. Anyone who actually gets nailed by this deserves it.
-
No joke, I don't think Apple had it on their mind to secure the OS from just plain stupidity!
-
Just in case...
How to detectand removethe OSX.RSPlug.A Trojan Horse -
I purposly downloaded this trojan. its kinda cool actually. brings me back to greek ancient history about the sneakiness of warrior (code)
-
I wouldn't, but the internet is fueled by porn as it is the most profitable avenue of the Internet in the United States and in fact all other countries world wide.
There are a lot of people looking for it. -
Yeah, this is pretty silly...downloading software from porn sites? Come on...
But still worth noting that this is just another sign that Mac users should still be cautious, even though we're currently safe. Macs haven't gotten viruses, but they can. -
this came off of Macrumors... but yah. Pr0n=virii
-
I'm surprised that it hasn't happened sooner though. Quite a lot of people hate Apple and probably the only thing stopping them from making new viruses is that that very same hatred deters them from learning how to code things that'll actually affect OS X
Now that Macs are gaining market share, I'm sure it'll be more lucrative shortly.
I still say we should start a pool and see which of the good PC antivirus companies will be the first mover in the Mac security market (this of course excludes Norton, Mcafee and Clam that are currently providing such services in their current incarnations, since there's no such thing as a real Mac antivirus market yet)
-
Maybe Microsoft will release Live OneCare for Mac.
-
Are they still doing that thing? LOL
I thought it had just quietly faded away to a very necessary death since I hadn't heard anything related to it for all this time (probably because no one uses it).
I guess I'm falling behind on the Microsoft news now that I'm using a Mac.... -
Yeah, they are
. I don't think they've updated it yet though...they should still be Windows Live OneCare 1.5.
-
There's a beta version of 2.0 right now too... so I guess they're not planning to get rid of it anytime soon.
-
It Begins!
(heheheh.) As Macs continue to gain popularity, in a few years it'll be in the same camp as Windows. Possible to keep safe, but not so much if you trust everything you read on shady porn sites... <_< -
Yeah, but I'm sure if people wanted to get into writing viruses for OS X, they'd realize they'd do much more damage trying to write a pure Unix virus where it could do some real damage.
Could you imagine a virus getting onto a major DHCP/WWW server? That would be... bad. -
You people ain't safe.. Theres plenty of viruses made to prove the theory that Mac OS X is just as prone to viruses as Windows and Linux alike, their not in the wild but they have been made and work really scary damn good. Look at OS X 9.. is was just as bad if not - worse then Windows...
This is just the beginning to the battle you mac users will have to face, it's gonna start out to be just common sense, then it becomes a malicious battle for you're virtual well being.
But right now any unsuspecting mac user with his macho attitude "my mac can't get infected with viruses!" that's into porn that goes onto that site is seriously gonna be boned - excuse the pun. lol - Gonna be a lot of people caught with they're pants down! heh..
But..
The day they make Java viruses.. We are all screwed, no matter what platform... I mean - really screwed lol.. -
OS X will eventually get viruses, for sure, but OS X is not as prone to viruses as Windows is, that is wrong. The way OS X works helps it be more secure than Windows is (for example, you need an administrator password to install an application), and sure, these thing can be eventually bypassed, but the fact that its in place helps secure OS X, compared to Windows.
And if any Mac user truly believes that they can't get viruses, they're wrong. Macs don't get viruses, but they can in the future. -
Windows (Vista) now requires an administrator password to install applications too, by default, as long as you're not logged in as an administrator user.
-
Just another example Vista copied OS X
, just joking around
.
Yeah, I know about that. But previous versions of Windows did not need this, and considering the majority of users are still on those previous versions of Windows, that's why I put it out. -
Well, it's true, but you can't have it both ways. If Windows copied the feature then they're not still lacking it.
Oh, I see... and I'll likewise skip Leopard's feature set when discussing OS X's features. -
Some would say that there's nothing to skip
-
SaferSephiroth The calamity from within
I think the whole virus thing is grossly overrated, even for PCs. Common sense and the right software is enough. The problem is with stupid people...they are always going to do stupid things. So let them do it.
-
Common sense and the right software.
So how much common sense does it take to resist the urge (if there even is such an urge) to click on a download link in an e-mail that says "GOATS AND FARMGIRLS!" or "DOWNLOAD THIS TO MAKE YOURSELF 20X BIGGER!"?
Sadly, apparently more than many people have.
