i highly doubt that apple would stick the p4 in their notebooks as they try to have some of the longer battery lifes out on the market. My guess is they would prolly put in a mobile dual core processor, and/or the Yonah chip when it comes out.

That is going to be great. I hope Apple will create a tougher laptop though, more like the Pismo and less like the Ti.

even though apple is using intel i may just order my ibook today. I dont think there is a big need to wait.

With the new intel CPU's that Apple will be implementing there will be a noticeable difference in battery life. First of all, the CPU's that Apple is using right now (I think they are made by Motorola, is that right) are not very power efficient. My friend can barely get 3 hours out of his Powerbook G4. With Intel's PM technology, which is what I assume will be used in the new Mactels, the processor will be more efficient. I am sure that stock Intel processors may be used on some test units, but I would assume that Apple would try and have Intel tweak the processors somehow to make the power consumption or processing power more in line with the unique Apple ideals. I am still uncertain how exactly Apple will engineer their new OSx86 to run only on the Mactels, but I am sure they will figure something out. However, it is getting to the point that the hackers may be able to work around any security settings that Apple puts in their new OSX so that it will run on regular PC's too. I currently have OSX 10.4 running on my old Travelmate, but it doesn't have internet. I may try and put it on my Ferrari but I really do not know if I want to go through all the trouble. Oh well, just my two cents.

the P4 chip isn't that great. In fact its a one of there worser (for lack of a better word) chips. The pm's can outperform the p4. plus with dual core chips out, you will get way better performance with a dual core then either a pm or p4 in both performance and power consumption

I thought the P4-M's are getting phased out of the market already. I mean, there is very little reason for it to stick around, IMO.

I see no reason why Apple should start to use Pentium M, nor P4 or P4M if the new Intel platform and Yonah chips are comming next year.

The Yonah platform is actually based on the PM architecture. What everyone does not understand that the PM chip is a competely different architecture than the previous Intel chips. The way the processor handles different computing tasks is vastly more efficient than the P4. This is why the PM gets better battery life, it is able to turn off parts of itself that are not needed and turn them back on when they are needed. Also, the PM can reduced the amount of seeds that go through it by minimizing the "work" it has to do, it gets rid of a lot of the redundant power hungry things that desktop processors take for granted. This is why it is such a huge improvement in mobile computing. I am still amazed that Intel cannot get better battery life because AMD still uses a desktop architeture in their mobile chips, but AMD just has better power consumption. However, the PM is a more efficient mobile chip than the Turion, even it the battery life if around the same. If AMD redesigned its Turion to an architecture like the PM then Intel would be in trouble because the AMD chip would probably last in the range of 4-5 hours (that is their fastest chip). AMD has not done this because it takes time and lots of money.

As for the Yonah thing, I am sure it will hit Apple's eventually but not for a while. Apple will first use a PM based chip because they want to see how they can adapt the Intel chip into the Apple ideology first. So in about two years expect to see a Powerbook with a dual core platform until then just wait for the new Powerbooks to come out. I am sure they will be very fast and very nice. As for me I am loving my Ferrari and maybe someday I will actually buy me another mac (had an old iMac).

The clock speed, memory, hard disk, graphics and everything else also matters. Comparing a 3.0 Ghz p4 and a 2.0 Ghz pm, the pm is actually a lot better.
For amd, it is fast and powerful, but it gets very hot. Therefore for notebooks it is not as good to use amd as your notebook will be very hot. amd is good for desktops, yes, but if you are talking about a notebook, you don't want to cook yourself if you put your notebook on your lap.

this is going to sound like a dumb question maybe, i don't have the same knowledge with computers like you guys i dont even know wjat the hell are you talkin about the p4's and pm4's or pms :p jeje. dumb joke . i have a powerbook, i just bought it and i love it. previously i had another computer with windows and it was ok but i like better the powerbook. the only thing that i don't like is that i can not play as much games specifically one that i like. here's the question. when those chips come out, am i going to be able to run .exe programs or windows based programs. and if that was possible would i have to buy another powerbook or just install the chip on the current one that i have???

to run windows based programs with a intel powered PB, at the very least, you would still need Virutal PC for mac to emulate windows in the mac environment. But since the cpu is CISC not RISC, the emu would prolly be faster.

However, there should be a high probability of being able to set up a dual boot with Windows XP on a different partition. Then you would have both OS X and XP running at full potetial.

You have got to be kidding me. Turion chipsets are superior in processing power to PM's and they actually run with less heat. The new Turion chip is much more advanced than the Athlon chips that AMD was using in their mobile line. I am still amazed that people are loyal to Intel after they consistently sell their processors for extremely high prices :amd64-2: :AMDINTEL:

    Samsung/Apple deal 'dropped'
October 17, 2005 - 08:41 EDT A US$3.8 billion investment deal between Apple and Samsung is no longer on the table, Reuters reports today. "The Korea Economic Daily reported on Saturday Apple had pulled out of the joint $3.8 billion investment plan due to deepening anti-Samsung sentiment among some South Korean politicians and civic groups. The paper quoted an unnamed senior Samsung official in the report." The source was quoted by telephone stating "We had had some talks with Apple earlier this year but it did not work out due to differences over terms," said the spokesman, adding they had dropped the joint investment talks "at a very early stage."

It is actually sad, because the best of the best would be a synthesis of samsung and apple laptop design!

No offense Edson, but it's too early to ask. Unless someone has a intel-based mac on their hands, nothing's for sure.

In fact, some questions of Edson can be answered already now:

    1. yes, you will have to buy new powerbook, no way to change your current G4 chip to Yonah.

    2. I doubt it will be possible by default to run windows .exe programs on Apple's powerbooks with "intel inside". However, I am sure that hackers will find a tweak pretty fast, and I expect that the trick will be more effective that just an emulation of Windows under Mac. Moreover, the dual core nature of Yonah in principle allows to run two OS-s at the same time. However, it depends on Apple's specific impelementation, wether or not you will be able to do so on Apple powerbook straight from the shop. Again, I believe the way to do so will be found very fast.

First Intel Macs on track for January!
    http://appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1368

    http://appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1359
Expected to make its debut even earlier than the new iBooks will be Apple's first Intel-based PowerBook, sources added. The new 15-inch PowerBook will carry over many of the design elements and styles that have made its aluminum PowerBooks so successful, but will be about 20- to 25-percent thinner than today's model. The 12-inch PowerBook is no longer on Apple's roadmap -- as reported in August -- and the new Intel-based 17-inch model is slated for release several months later.

The Turion's aren't better than P-Ms in any case - they're about on par with each other, with the P-M edging out the Turion in performance per clock cycle and battery life. Basically the Turion is a downclocked Athlon 64 for notebook purposes - nothing to special, as it was slapped together to fight the P-M. Hopefully now that AMD has actually developed the Turion (not just take the Athlon 64 and downclock it), the dual-core version will put up a better fight to its Intel counterpart than its predcessor did to the P-M.

It's not a "tweak", and it's already been done -- sort of, with 10.4.1. (See Darwine page at osx86project.org).

Windows is not "emulated" in any case; in Virtual PC on a Mac, a set of PC hardware and an x86 CPU is emulated. In VMware/Virtual PC/etc. on a PC, a set of PC hardware is emulated while x86 code is ran directly on the CPU.

In Wine, a compabitility layer implements enough of the Win32 API to run many Windows programs.

Dual core CPUs do NOT magically enable a CPU to run multiple operating systems at the same time. This is already possible with virtualization software (Virtual PC/Virtual Server, VMware, etc.). They simply allow significantly improved multitasking. Vanderpool technology, however, would make it possible without significant performance losses. (See Wikipedia's Intel Core page.)

I can't wait to find out what Steve brings us...but it had better rock, because my TiBook 667 is getting a bit long in the tooth. And I have Windows needs these days, so if it's Intel Inside then there had better be a way to run Win apps...Help me, VMWare, you're my only hope!

yeah im hoping that the new powerbooks with the dual cores will run XP, or vista. does anyone think that they will come preloaded with a windows OS anytime soon? like you amdvsintel, if this is possible im going to be jumping on one right away. maybe we can get a group buy going or something.

I don't think Apple is going to ask MS for a license to Windows anytime soon. Even if they did, MS probably wouldn't let them - Apple and MS are rivals, remember that.

yeah, i guess thats true. it makes sense, apples OS is pretty stable as it is, works well, and looks good too. i asked some people and they said windows will run,but you would need an emulator or something. i was using an apple imac that they had at futureshop and i must say, i like their OS. Its easy to use, different than the traditional windows, and convenient.

so, i bought an ibook, with the intention of using it for a couple weeks to get a real feeling of the operating system, and returning it. it really is pretty solid and im starting to like it a lot. i think that new dual core powerbook is mine.

Well, I wouldn't jump the gun like that. I'd wait for Apple to work out all the kinks in the new PB Pros. In addition, I'd wait for Merom - that'll be 64-bit enabled, Yonah is not.

I love my Mac - it's great (no need for an anti virus/spyware). However, I must say that I am very dissapointed on how much software/hardware costs (on average 2X more than Windows stuff :budget :). Other than that, like I said - it's great. I use it mostly for Photoshop/Video Editing as well as some word processing.
