Apparently Apple is using the accelerometers currently found in Macbooks to identify when a product is being stolen and will set off some sort of alarm.
Hopefully there'll be a software update, or the software will come packaged with Leopard(maybe it'll be part of the 10.4.10 update).
I had a thought though. Most of the time when your stuff is being stolen, you're not there, or are incapacitated. What good is an alarm going to be when somebody is stealing your laptop from your home while you're at the grocery store?

Ya I don't see this helping much. Maybe, but think about car alarms, no one does anything when they hear them, this will be the same. All it is is a marketing ploy by Apple. They can say we made your laptop harder to steal and people will pay for that.

That would be a good idea to have in notebooks these days especially in public areas. Places like librarys or universities. I have seen a lot of students pick up their notebooks and take them to the bathroom with them cause they didnt have a lock or anything else to tie down the lap when they needed to go.
I personally have a Targus DefCon1 and it rocks. It has a motion sensor so if it gets moved a 95db high pitched alarm goes off.
Laptops these days should have some type of motion sensor alarm that can be toggled on/off. Nothing will stop from having ur laptop stolen. But deterrents may help. -
You guys haven't heard of iAlertU?

Yeah, not news. This has been around since the intel macs were released.
Theres all kinds of toys for the macs that have accelerometers.
Lo Jack would be better. -
I have, and like the one from Apple, they are just a gimmick IMO. A lock that lock its to a desk is a deterrent, but an alarm that the theif does not know is there until it goes off is not a deterrent. Your only hope is that they will just leave it. But i suspect most will run away with it. The point is that it's probably best not to leave your $1000+ computer lying around in public period.

Sneaky_Chopsticks Notebook Deity
That's a very good point to say.lol
Well, just don't leave anything around in public.
I even tested this out once since I was bored. I placed a $2 watch that looked like a real rolex, so I pretended to go to the bathroom, and I looked around, and saw some guy take the watch. After that,I ran up to him and beat him until he gave back my $2 watch. XD
For the record, I didn't even get into trouble! ^_^
ahhh, good times, good times.
