Awesome, a shiny new machine to get infected with the newest mac trojan that's breaking out!
Hah, I knew this day would come, all you apple users are caught with you're pants down. -
Literally, as the trojan's only downloadable from porn sites
-
lol there goes the neighborhood. 1 virus on apple ahhhhhh!!!
wheres d new macbook? looks like the old one 2 meh
edit: my bad. WOW at the new specs! much more deserving, and ships with leopard! -
It's the new one, but it's actually the OLD one (so typical for Apple) + new CPUs. A huge 13" though...
I would of expected a lighter, 3 lbs laptop with a LED screen, but instead they just went with Santa Rosa. -
Raymond Luxury-Yacht Notebook Consultant
Santa Rosa (and the x1300 that comes alongside) is about the only improvement. Nothing to get crazy about, I suppose.
Can someone knowledgeable give us some insight as to what sort of performance upboost one should expect from Santa Rosa? I remember having read somewhere that one really should be using Penryn processors anyway to make the most out of Santa Rosa, and that without these processors, the performance increase wouldn't amount to much. Is that right ? Do these MacBooks have Penryn processors? -
Peryn hasn't been released yet.
Santa Rosa is a platform which is capable of using a Peryn processor. The current CPUs on the Macbooks are still the Meroms, so a boost in processing speed is minimal.
The only actual upgrade to take notice of is the X3100 GPU, which isn't too significant, as sane users would get the Macbook Pro should they have the need to run GPU intensive apps.
PS. UK hasn't been updated yet. -
Its just a minor update for the holidays, that's why it was rather unnoticed and not a significant update. From the looks of it, then maybe they will update it at Penryn's launch as well.

Don't be so Mac bashing...I've always said, Mac OS X currently has no virus targeting it, but doesn't mean it will never. As OS X's market share continues to grow, eventually there will be a need for antivirus on OS X.

SAM,
how will Apple cope w/ this new & growing threat?
doesnt seem to me they have much experience compared to the PC side of things.
id really hate for my MBP to become ****ed up just like my desktop (vista side of things). -
In the worst case Apple could just rely on Symantec to take care of thing with their bloatware
-
What's that guy Making fun of Mac heads for?
I haven't been on here lately, was there a virus that appeared on Macs or what? -
There was a Trojan horse that was disguised as a porn codec or something like that.
-
^^^
i see. -
you have to admit though....
i bet 90% of the trojen attacks happened to apple owners with the 30'' displays
-
Haha, naw I ain't bashing or saying you're all screwed. Just pointing out the obvious, all these mac users switch because of the virus deal on Windows, well the tide is turning.
-
One trojan that has to be downloaded from a porn site and installed manually with admin permissions means that "the tide is turning"? Can I turn back the tide if I spit against it?
There are plenty of things to bash Apple for (considering I actually own an Apple computer, I have far greater rights than you to do so), which I do frequently.
Your argument is specious and just really, really ignorant. -
I wouldn't worry about it. If any of you remember the Month of Apple Bugs thing, where a group strived to expose as many holes in OS X as possible, Apple managed to regularly put out Software Updates to patch things up. I wouldn't worry about issues for now.
And it doesn't seem like they have much experience, but its worth noting that Apple surely already has practice at it. I would find it hard to believe that Apple hasn't practiced at all on how to respond to a virus attack on OS X, and that they don't plan to get onto it until it actually happens
.
-
That is only one reason why most users switch, and you're very wrong in thinking the tide's turning
. This only proves that OS X is vulnerable, which most Mac users have acknowledged in the start, this is not a sign that starting from now on OS X will be a virus target. At least, not in the way Windows was and still is.

i see that the new macbook can have 4 GB of ram, i heard that the old ones can support 3. So does leopard make it available to have 4GB or is it becuase of the new macbook itself. Sorry i am not that good with macs since i have onoly had one for a couple days.
-
Its the hardware, not software. The Santa Rosa MacBook Pros supported 4 GB of RAM, and that has been since June, long before Leopard's launch.
-
The x3100 is pretty cool, but I guess it won't bring that many improvements to gaming, which is what i would be more interested in. Oh well. the gma950 is good enough for what I need it for.
New macbook is coming!
