I just want to put a quick note about my experience in games with this toy.
Doing so mostly because it was different from what i ve seen on notebookcheck.
Playing metro 2033 on ultra for around 5 hours or so under win7 - fps didnt drop below 30.
WoW: Cataclysm under mac os - on ultra as well, fps doesnt drop below 50 (which i set as maximum) only have to disable sunshafts since it crash the system for some reason.
My guess is that tests on notebookcheck were made on larger screens, specifically something like 24 inch. However WoW gave me reasonable results on 24 inch monitor as well - fps still didnt drop below 30, however it seemed like it needed a minute or two to "heat up", till then there were some 0.1s freezes at times.
Whats even better - its quite.
2.2Ghz. No SSD.

After spending significant time with it last night...I must agree completely.
This system is chewing up every game I'm throwing at it. Even Crysis Warhead is running well over 30fps @ 1920x1200. Everything I've purchased on Steam (TF2, Dead Space, Dragon Age, Mass Effect 2, etc.) is running at full resolution and at great fps on medum/high settings. Couldn't be happier with the gaming performance, considering the formfactor. -
FYI, screen size doesn't matter; resolution does. Notebookcheck uses 1080p when they test max settings.
-
do you play sc2? am curios how well this game plays on this gpu.
now am tempted to upgrade my macbook pro 2010 -
This was my only concern and only point holding me back from deciding to buying the new Macbook Pro 15 2011. Btw, I wouldnt notice any difference playing the same games on the MBP15 would I, since you're using the MBP17
-
30fps on Metro 2033 on Ultra? You've gotta be kidding me.
Two of the fastest cards on the planet - GeForce GTX 485m and Radeon 6970m barely do 16 and 18 fps respectively. -
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480M - Notebookcheck.net Tech -
Ok guys sorry for confusing you, its indeed not 30 fps, i mean i was sure its 30, but now that i tried fraps it shows 18 :/ I played at 18 fps and didnt notice it i guess, i played on bad pc for too long.
Having run fraps in Battlefield: bad company and Metro, it indeed doesnt show 30 fps on high, however fps rate is very stable, if it shows 18 its pretty much always 18 ~3 fps. -
-
Ok here is some screens i managed to make (resized them but they are still like 1mb total).
1680x1050 resolution, external 22 inch monitor (runs better on native 1440x900)
B: Bad Company 2 — standard medium settings
CoD:BO — high from what i can tell
DA2: Standard high. Seem to be dropping to 25 when a lot of stuff is going on.
Bulletstorm — Medium settings

So far I've tried:
Fallout New Vegas
Ghostbusters
DeadSpace
Dragon Age Origins
Splinter Cell Conviction
Bioshock 2
Mass Effect 2
SC2 (OSX and Win)
Team Fortress 2 (OSX and Win)
Half-Life 2, Chapter 1, 2 (OSX and Win)
Portal (OSX and Win)
Crysis 2 Beta
Crysis Warhead
all those that run on both run a little better when under Windows. The only game of the entire lot that I'm running below 1920x1200 is Crysis 2 Beta...and I assume that's a driver issue, as this GPU is chewing through Crysis Warhead at 1200p.
lots of videos in the benchmarking thread, though I haven't made any of them. this GPU is legit. -
DA2 on OSX at 2560x1440 - seems to work fine on standard high as well. I haven't noticed any real slow-downs in big battles either, but maybe that's because I'm still only at the very beginning trying to raise gold (which btw feels very un-epic).
Pleasantly surprised that DA2 launched fully compatible with OSX. Kind of disappointed in the game itself so far though. -
^^ do you run da2 in osx? how?
Btw i posted some screens with FPS on top of it on previous page for those who are interested. DA2 inclused -
If you preordered and got the signature edition, most of the extras are automatically unlocked after you enter in the code, but you have to download and install the 3 large packages manually (the emporium, and a couple of others) from the website. It'll be in the Profile section of your web account. Not sure if this is the case in Windows. -
what temps are ya'll getting while gaming?
how is this comparable to previous generations? -
the temps I'm getting are just like last gen. Until I can get proper fan control in Windows, however, things will be higher there. on the 2010's, Lubbo's Fan Control worked to keep the temps lower (at the expense of a loud computer). It's not yet compatible with the 2011s though, so the 2011s heat up like the 2010's did without Lubbos (mid/high 90C CPU, 70C-80C GPU).
it's certainly built to take it, but I'd rather have more control. I don't mind having a loud system when gaming if it means temps are 15C lower, you know? -
I had 2008yr mbp (santa rosa c2d 2.4) and this one is WAY more quite.
Ran DA2 natively under mac os today. Fps is at least not lower then under win7. -
Just curious (I know the pc only games must be in windows but how about those which will work in both?? do you find any benefits with either one???)
D. -
This machine is a blast. So much power on a single notebook coming with Mac OS X is just gorgeous.
-
-
I am looking forward to some fun gaming between projects (during downtime... if I get any..lol)
D. -
yep, this GPU will do nicely.
the only game I have that I'm not running at 1920x1200 is Crysis 2. Even Crysis warhead runs smoothly at that resolution with medium settings. -
BTW anyone try Civ5 yet (on either OS)? I have the game, but I don't have a late-game save to test its performance (you can play early game at pretty much any setting since it's all black anyway).
... I suppose the obvious solution is to just play through a game...one more turn.... -
I don't have a late game save either. In fact, I think I've played the game approx. 1 hour total. bought it at launch. lol.
-
-
wait, so can people who bought Civ5 for Windows download it for OSX as well? I didn't realize it came out on both platforms.

nii, you having any stability issues when under OSX? any random freezes or lockups that you just shrugged off?
-
not really. the only thing I noticed is that when I shut the lid and open up again it takes a couple seconds to wake up. This also happened on my 2010 mbp though until I changed to an ssd drive. -
understood. just looking for some pattern to what so many people are seeing.

would the games perform better with a different config? I have the 15" due to arrive on Tuesday with the 512 SSD and 2.3 chip and hires anti glare screen. Also arriving with 8mb ram. Cannot wait to test it.
I swore I was never going to buy another mac and with all the reviews and feedback decided I would give it another spin......... -
-
No freezes here
.
I did uninstall gfxcardstatus as it was kind of buggy.. do you have that? -
I do have that, yes.
I'll certainly consider uninstalling it if I continue to have issues. -
-
I installed it on the SSD, yes.

So I just tried out TW:Shogun 2 on Boot camp at 2560 x 1440. Sadly, had to run the battles at medium or low
...you can squeak by at High if you don't fast-forward battle at all and don't have too many troops engaging at once though.
-
-
any tried crysis 2? if so, frames/temps?
after update, any problems w/ freezing and gaming, etc? -
Crysis 2 = ~25-30fps @ 1920x1200 + Very High; 50fps-60fps @ 1440x900 + Very High.

Nice one
-
im surprised it actually runs on med.
thats crazy... -
