    I've got a 15.4" MBP.

    2.1Ghz Core Duo
    100GB HD
    Radeon X1600 256MB
    2GB RAM
    Leopard 10.5

    Idle is around 60 (1000rpm)

Load with "$ yes > /dev/null" (two instances in two terminal windows) puts the temps at 100C

    WTH?????

I realize i may never run at 100% but 50% is more likely but still DANG!

BTW, i bought this notebook used from a friend.

    Suggestions?

is it a CoreDuo or C2D?

the CD ran hot, the c2d run hot too, but CD needed a revision to the heatsink.

is it shutting down on its own? 100c is the spec temp for stuff to start happening.

It's a CoreDuo, so it will run a lot hotter than the current models. cashmonee has a CD MBP, he can give you greater insight into what temperatures to expect.

1000rpm is pretty low, though. Get smcFanControl and up the speeds of your fans.

Ya i got smcFanControl last night and at 6000 rpm, i had it down to 86 but was insanely loud.
2000 is about optimal, any input on this?

I thought maybe I need to open it up and re-apply the thermal paste (as5)...worth it?

Well, 100 C is pretty ridiculous...I'd expect 80 C average at most. But 1000 RPM is rather low, yes, I'd say go at least 1800 RPM.

Do you have all the firmware updates. I would expect the idle fan speed to be higher.

hmmm that's fairly high. I have never gotten to 100 before, the highest has been in the low 90s.

Hrm... I'm basically running the same system as you, and I don't hit that high.

This is a used MBP? It sounds like the first version of the CD, where they actually had to replace the logic boards and also redo the thermal paste.

The second version CD MBP (which is what I have) still had the fan speed at 1k and I pushed it up to 3k min with SMCfancontrol and I hit max 76, under max load while gaming or running VM's.

is it under warranty still? if it is, id look into taking it in.

chances are it cant get any worse, so itll either get better, or just stay the same.

Well one of my friends took my 6600 gt in my desktop to 130 degrees celcius by somehow playing some internet flash game. It lived... :)
