Hi folks..
I will be trying to provide tutorials for some tasks that I feel have importance especially for new users and switchers ... I will try to update this thread as regularly as I can and provide more insights into os x.
well ... it's been about 2 days since I got my mac ... and have spent them predominantly getting accustomed to the OS and increasing my productivity with respect to day to day tasks... finding keyboard shortcuts... and the like ...
Data Transfer between MAC (OS X) and Windows (XP) over a home network (wired/wireless/direct laptop to laptop ethernet cable hookup)
Anyways ... the primary reason of this tutorial is to provide a tutorial on data transfer between a MAC OS X device and a win XP PC over a network at home ... (connecting through either the router's ethernet ports/ wireless/ a direct connection between the two machines via an ethernet cable) ...
The reason I opted for this as a means of data transfer is that I'm not satisfied that MacFuse and MacDrive won't screw up my data somewhere along the line during a transfer.... I want to do a one time data transfer from my ntfs external hard drive to my mac hard drive ... and then format my external hard drive to hfs+journaled .. and then retransfer the data onto it ...
Now onto the procedure ...
In windows xp ...
1. go to a folder/drive that you want to share with your mac ...
2. Right click ... head to properties ... and click on the "sharing" tab
3. In Network sharing and security .... there'll be an wizard to start file sharing .... go through the steps of the wizard and input what it asks you to ... and give the network any name of your choosing.
4. Now head to the folders/drives again that you want to share ... repeat steps 1. and 2.
5. Under the "sharing" tab ... in "network sharing and security" ... check the "share this folder on teh network" option and click ok.
In MAC ...
1. Open System Preferences
2. Under the "internet & network option" ... click on sharing
3. check Personal File sharing and windows sharing
4. click against windows sharing and note the ip address that is formed.
Now, to access data...
To access the MAC data from Windows,
Goto "run" (win+r) and type in the ip address exactly as it was displayed in the mac (pt. 4)
wait a while and a new explorer window will pop up ... and you may have to give your mac user name and password to start file sharing .... just drag and drop what you want ...
To access Windows Data from the MAC ...
Open Finder ... go to "Network" ... and wait a short while and you'll see the network workgroup you created in windows. Click on it ... and you'll find the name of your computer (windows) ... click on that as well .. and you'll be asked to connect ...
there will be an option for which folder/disk you would like to enable sharing with ... click on the appropriate one and enter your windows user name/password in the next screen ...
you'll find a drive appear in the desktop ... double click it .. and you're all set to start data transfer ....
Hope this has been of help...
More tutorials later ...
