I may not agree with what Apple is doing but, as the article said, Apple has not officially supported aftermarket hard drive upgrades in the iMac for years. So their lack of support shouldn't be new, this is just the first time that they are actually restricting people.

Big difference between not supporting (i.e. voiding warranty) and allegedly deliberately engineering a mechanism to prevent upgrades completely, assuming there's no other reasonable rationale for that particular design.

It's pretty crappy that Apple pulled this stunt. They should have just stuck a temperature sensor in the HDD bay and left it at that. There's no reason to go proprietary on your users.

Did anyone here besides me see that OWC posted a lie? It's been confirmed AND mentioned on Macrumors, but the OP didn't see that and only posted FUD here. . Many people are easily upgrading the hard drives in the new iMacs. Please find out for yourselves before you guys just start hating on Apple.

My understanding is that you can "upgrade" to a non-Apple supplied disk, but that the missing sensor will not be able to supply HDD drive temp to the SMC (System Management Controller). Resulting, any hardware tests will indicate "failure" of that sensor. The question remaining is whether that it would constitute a voiding of warranty if Apple has deemed that the sensor is requisite for adequate SMC functioning.

HLDan, Are you saying that aftermarket drives are available (some or all) that replicate the sensor, or otherwise somehow render the issue moot?

    Are you referring to this?
    http://www.tuaw.com/2011/05/13/hdd-fan-control-software-addresses-imac-hard-drive-replacement-i/

It would seem that it might lead to warranty issues.

I'm not certain about any sensor issue. Basically I was making a point that the OP conveniently posted a link from Macrumors but also conveniently neglected to read further that people are successfully installing HD's in the new iMacs and the OWC publication is being held suspect right now.

I don't even understand why they had external thermisters when the HD's are SMART capable.

Urgh... I am getting a bit irritated with the fact that apple is starting to make everything they make disposable....
My favorite thing about my Apple notebooks is the fact that I can use them for so long (the one I am tying on is from late 2006/ early 2007) and it has yet to really fail me (the HD did go out under warranty)

I'm not certain about the sensor issue as much as you, but the point is the article brings up a valid concern if true. Whether or not people can install a new HDD into their iMac is irrelevant because there is always a way to do it. The point I had when I brought the article over here is to bring awareness into the situation and show that Apple is making things more difficult to do.

"until something concrete comes up like direct information from Apple"

Yeah, that frequently happens. Don't hold your breath...
