I doubt its necessity :p. At least for now, definitely there isn't a real need for anything above 4 GB of RAM.

If you're really up for it, you can get 32 GB of RAM on the Mac Pro desktop :D.

    Wow, that's awesome.

I don't know why but I often exceed my 4GB and end up with a 2GB swap file... sometimes because of memory leaks. Sometimes because I run 3 Eclipse instances, VMWare @ 1GB, Photoshop, and iPhoto as well as the usual apps that are always open like Mail, Safari, etc.

Hmmm... I just notice that the "why do I need 8GB of RAM"-rationalization-process has set in... ;)

it doesn't really look like it has been officially declared to work properly, but it looks like it could be that way.

I could seriously use 8gb of ram if this is actually going to work properly, photoshop, maya, after effects, etc. are ram hungry monsters.

penryn is a processor. it runs on the santa rosa platform.

    i upgraded from 2GB to 4GB for about $10 (i sold the 2 GB).

I would go from 4GB to 8 GB if the price was right. something on the order of $10 i think.

"640K ought to be enough for anybody." - Bill Gates, 1981

For most people 4gb will probably be the new sweet spot, but its nice to know that that is no longer the ceiling.

I've had 6GB of RAM in my Mac Pro since March... I could use another 2GB some times though.

bmwrob; The RAM for the Mac Pro has come down in price quite well, and aftermarket RAM would cost you $1800 to get it to 32GB.

I know myself, and within 3 years, I'll have mine up to at least 20GB. Of course, the prices will have dropped substantially by then too... And who knows, 8GB chips might be usable then too.

Well that's certainly possible for current Mac Pros. The 5400X chipset supports 38-bit addressing with up to 128GB RAM support in a 16x8GB configuration. Currently Leopard only supports 36-bit addressing through PAE for 64GB support, but Snow Leopard is supposed to support 44-bit addressing for 16TB of RAM.

Now you are going too far in the future :p

I would be perfectly satisfied with just 1TB of RAM.

I've got 4gigs in my iMac, and I've tried to hammer this machine to get it to show some slowness/sluggishness in performance. Has yet to happen
