I was reading this benchmark:
http://www.macworld.com/2006/11/firstlooks/mbpbench/index.php
and it says that Rosetta performance is vastly improved under 10.4.8. I wonder if only Core 2 duo machines benefit from it? Can someone with a Core Duo MB/MBP confirm?
-
Sorry to be completely off topic, but is that Tux smashed into an Apple symbol?
-
Yep, he looks happy there.
-
I have not really noticed any difference. In fact, I was realizing how slow Word can be with a lot of correction notes and things going on.
-
cashmonee,
You seem to have had a lot of misfortune with your recent Apple experience. I was wondering what platform were you using before you got this “new” Mac?
When you say, “I was realizing how slow Word ….”, would you please elaborate on that.
Thanks -
the difference between native apps and rosetta apps in terms of speed and start up is huge.
-
I know. That wasn't my question... I 'd like to know if 10.4.8 improved Rosetta performance, specially on Core Duo machines. Just installed it anyways, let's see how good it gets.
-
When do you think rosetta will be away and universal is everything.
-
I came from a P4 XP machine before this. If you have ever had someone edit something for you on Word, you know they can track the changes and leave footnotes. I had just done that for the first time with my MBP and it can really slow down when dealing with a bunch of those. Especially if you are adding more. As for just typing, Word is fairly snappy with an occasional letter showing up lag, but if you start using some more advanced features it starts to hiccup a little more.
**EDIT** For vaio_boi, probably a few years before it is completely gone, similar to Classic. But it will only be probably 6-12 months before nearly everyone is runnng the programs they need in Universal and just a few niche things are left. Remember though that many people will not just buy CS3 when it hits, they may wait a little while, so Apple will continue to employ Rosetta in Leopard, which should be around for 18-24 months after its release. -
cashmonee,
Thank you for the clarification. I wonder if the application you’re using is in Universal Binary (UB) or not? I am just curious, not that I have any solution, sorry. -
No, MS Word is not UB. Everything else is fast, just the non-universal apps.
OS X 10.4.8 improves Rosetta performance?
