Does anyone have suggestions for a OS X MP3 tagging program that's as powerful or more powerful than Windows' MP3Tag? ( www.mp3tag.de)
I definitely want to be able to access Amazon's database and have the program auto-tag an album.
Thanks.

i guess your best option would be TuneUp, they have a nice integration with iTunes but they use the gracenote database, also, there is a limit of songs per month that you can tag if you go for the free version
-
So no freeware applications that are similar? I love being able to, after downloading an album, just load it into MP3Tag and get the album art and correct other info.
I'd also definitely prefer the application to stay separate from iTunes.
Edit: BTW I love your taste in music, me going out on a limb and taking a guess at your interests based on your username and avatar ;D -

Perhaps running mp3tag inside a windows virtual machine will solve all of your problems as a last resort.
-
I have VMWare Fusion, but it seems so much of a hassle - booting up a separate partition to use the virtual machine just to tag MP3s. I thought Apple software and hardware was, in general, renowned for "just working".

ROFL
Welcome to reality.
Fusion is probably quicker than scrabbling around for something non-optimal under OS X. -
I don't use any software like that, so not sure what is similar and what isn't.. what features you want and don't want...
have you tried any programs out and seen if they worked for you?
as for this exact program, I just downloaded it and ran it in Darwine as a quick test and it worked fine for me.. saw my whole iTunes library, read my songs right, and everything.... might try that if you want.. not sure if you used anything like Wine/Darwine/Crossover before though...
Darwine isn't quite as easy to use as Crossover, but its free, check here for latest compiled versions
http://www.kronenberg.org/darwine/
he has 1.1.21 up.. i tested on 1.1.20, but its a very simple little program, should work....
if you want to try a free trial of Crossover, which is much easier to use, you can try that at
www.codeweavers.com
say if you have an issue and maybe i can help you out, I've used Wine based things for years, on Linux and OSX, and make my own home-made Mac ports for games and other software doing so. -
I actually got a Crossover Mac license for free during their "Lame Duck" promotion last October/November.
I still have the license and everything - do I just download the "CrossOver Mac Professional Version 8.0.0" or do I get "CrossOver Games Mac Version 7.7.2 Downloads"?
I've actually tried around 4 programs that claimed to tag MP3s but none of them offered the ease of use and control of MP3Tag on Windows.
Anyhoo, something unrelated - how does CrossOver Games Mac Version work? Is it essentially the same thing as running VMWare Fusion and gaming there? -
I'm not sure what your license supports, but you can try it...
usually if you log in and you had a licesne to an older version you could go under your downloads and see older versions for download.
Crossover uses Wine, which attempts to replicate the windows APIs for other OSes. With no support or licensing available from Microsoft, it ends up being a lot of guess work and trial and error, so its not perfect, but it has gotten pretty good in the last couple of years. Its basically a way to run Windows software without having to run Windows or a whole virtual environment. I mainly use it for games, but thats much more difficult to get done (because of the graphics), but for simple little programs like MP3Tag, its much easier.
I'll throw together an unsupported Mac version real quick if you want me to, can make it just like a normal .app mac file you double click and run. The problem is, unles you want to tear into it to see how I did it, you wont be able to install MP3Tag upgrades. -
MP3Tag for mac
It is much larger than just the Windows program because it has to have Wine and support files and X11 built in.
you can download it here
http://www.mediafire.com/file/zf5dzymhvvz/MP3Tag OSX (intel).zip
to install, just unzip the file, and drag and drop the mp3tag.app into your applications folder and double click it to run. It will do a short initialization on first run.
this is totally unsupported and the port was made by me in about 30 minutes... so i have no idea if it fully works, but it seemed to work what little testing I did... download and try it out if you want. Using Wine it will only run on Intel Macs, no PowerPCs.
Main things to know
It installs a directory structure in your home folders library under Application Support/mp3tag/
and a plist file in your home library preferences folder called mp3tag.plist
if you ever have problems with it where you need to start over like the first time you ran it, you can delete this folder and plist, if they don't exist it makes it when you run the program the first time. If you save anything inside the program to its C drive structure, that is inside the mp3tag bottle thats in Application Support, you might want to go into the fake drive C inside there and copy stuff out before you remove the folder. Do not remove anything else inside Application Support or Preferences, it can really mess up your computer!
let me know if certain things aren't working, and I can check to see if i can fix it or make a work around... didn't spend much time on it. -
Wow, thanks for spending so much time on it - I will be sure to download it and give it a go.
-
Fantastic - thanks for the application! I just downloaded it on my MBP and it's exactly what I'm looking for.
-
hope it works good for ya, no idea what parts will work and what wont... I did edit some tags on some music, doesn't like DRMed music files, but everything else I tried worked fine.
I was looking and apparently it has an auto update feature. If that feature does work, it is more likely to have issues... so.... not sure you want to try the auto update... just remember what things i said to delete if you have to start over from scratch (didn't feel like making an uninstaller
too much work)
-
Kudos to you!
Just goes to show what hoops you have to go thorough in OS X just to get something basic in Windows... -
was just for that program.. there are many other ways to do the same things in OSX, its not adding any functionality.... sure you got to jump through hoops if you want one exact piece of software to run on an OS it wasn't ever made for... wouldn't be any easier in Windows, actually it would be much harder... don't blame the OS for some guy not writing his piece of software for it.
-
so, what are they? i need this functionality, but this one looks way too cludgey. everytime i need to edit my tags i have to transfer back and forth to windows (i use tagscanner).
just a PITA. i don't blame the guy for not supporting OS X. i mean, really, who can you blame for freeware? i just wish their were more OS x freeware titles to do simple things that i can get done so easily in windows.
video conversion is another sorely-lacking area (and don't tell me handbrake, doesn't support a lot of file types). -
I made a port using Wine to OSX in about 30 minutes... so ya. I'd blame the guy who made it or not spending a few hours making a really good one.
Search on Macupdate and Version tracker for ID3 and find a lot of editors... i usually focus on the freeware ones. -
Hi,
I'm testing this "OS X version" of mp3 tag and it looks good. The loading time is quite long but i guess it normal if the program is running into another emulator.
Something strange happenned with my external drives (linked with firewire 800) : I can't acces through MP3 tag to the external drive.. the dialog box is ok, ad is displaying the differents "volumes", i can browse them and see the contents, but when i try to select a folder located on this external drive, the program doesn't allow me..
Everything is working good when trying with a "local" folder on the main hard drive.
Does anyone have an idea to fix this problem, which, i guess, should be very minor... probably a permission setting to change somewhere. I tried to change to "shared folder" in the info box, and even tried to change the read/write permission of my external drive.
Thanks a lot for the app and for your help.
French regards,
Mathieu. -
What about SongGenie?? it kinda does the same thing as far as finding titles and authors...oh and then coverscout grabs the cover
-
that version of MP3Tag I set up is a pretty quick and bad port, and doesn't even work on Snow Leopard I believe. With some new porting tools I've made, I'll make another quick port and post it up in here that works better.
as for finding stuff on your hard drive, it should see everything on your mac. In Browse you have to go to root ( looks like / ) and all your mounted drives are then under Volumes ... so like /Volumes/<disk name> ... but dunno if that will totally work, maybe try after i make a better port here today.... but cant seem to get the mp3tag website up to get the latest version. -
Took me awhile to finish writing a new version of Wineskin that I used to port this... but I think this one should work a lot better...
**********LINK TO DOWNLOAD**********
MP3Tag 2.44 Mac OS X Wineskin based port download (45MB)
**********LINK TO DOWNLOAD**********
its kinda big, yes, thats the way it is when you have to use Wine to run a full windows app on OSX or Linux... has to reproduce a lot of Windows...
EDIT: this download has a bug I'll make a new version to fix... It only works on 10.5 if you have Xquartz 2.4.0 installed... it should work fine on 10.6 by default. -

The Tagger is quite good, although a bit expensive for the full license. I think it's best for mass-rename functionality; it's also the only program I know, that allows you to 'trim' unnecessary bits of the title.
-
For what it's worth, that was pretty smooth. Writing your own port tools and then taking some time to troubleshoot for the guy.
-
its fun... I usually port games, but other apps are good too....
sadly I found a bug in this port I stuck up.. that only works on 10.6 .... or 10.5 if you have Xquartz 2.4 installed... gotta fix it again

I'd like to to reactivate the discussion about this question please..
CAN ANYONE HELP ?
Thanks a lot !!!
