Is OSX faster then windows or are they the same speed?

I know Linux if faster then Vista and Windows 7, but is OSX even faster?

    Assume specs are the same.

Boot time wise, OSX decimates Windows Vista/7.

Gaming wise, Windows is faster than OSX.

I think "decimates" is a very strong word. The only real stall in booting Win7 on a MBP is the POST. Once the OS starts booting, the speed is close to the same.

On my Sager notebook, Win7 boots as fast as my MBP boots OS X from power-on, despite the Sager having a slightly slower processor.

ok, os x is a very nice os but it is not as popular as windows. Don't get me wrong here. the only reason i would go with windows is that it is in use in many large companies. my bachelor degree is mainly windows. so that's why i'm mainly on windows. but every body has his own preference.

I love overly generalistic beliefs "ie. Linux is faster than Windows" or "OS X is faster/slower than Windows" as if these operating systems only did (1) thing and the performance could be qualified as a single value.

All Chevys are faster than all Fords. On every terrain. Under every weather condition.

    Sure it boots faster.

But you only need to boot into an OS so many times.

The biggest factors will be the applications you plan on running.

I agree that OSX boots faster than Windows and, at least in my experience, Ubuntu. Definitely a noticeable difference. Waking from sleep seems to very fast for all systems. Safe sleep (OSX) and Hibernate (Windows) appear to be comparable as well.

The major performance difference I've seen is with Flash. It seems to run much better on Windows than either Linux or OSX. It's not awful, mind you, but it just seems to be better on Windows. Just my $0.02.

Its not so much that its faster, its generally that it has less software installed at boot (crapware/bloatware) and is generally more stable because of its UNIXBSD core, which means it doesnt usually slow down for many years and you shouldent need to reinstall

ok guys, each o.s has it's own advantages and disadvantages. It's up to the end user to decide which programs he would like to use and therefore which os to go for.

No need to get hasty and conclusive. We are having a perfectly civilized thread here.
