Ok here is what happened today...
I was at my campus computer store today to buy a license for Windows Office 2007.
I was at the register paying when someone brought back a unibody 2.4 ghz 15" MBP to return at the sales associate next to mine. After I had finished my transaction, I decided to stick around in the vicinity to eavesdrop on why he wanted to return it (and also his reaction to the 15% restocking fee).
Turns out, the computer itself was fine, he just did not like Mac OS and wanted a full refund. He was also past the return period (I think 14 days), because he thought it was 30 days. So it was either he exchange it for the same model, or get a store credit.
He was furious and kept arguing because he wanted money back. Thats when I stepped in and offered him $1000 cash (major lowball). He wanted $1500, but then I said to him "Look, I'll give you $1200, no more, or you can take a store credit piece of paper thats worth nothing. And...because it's open, you'll have a tough time selling it for more than $1200). Angry people are so gullible.
He agreed. I examined it at the store, all looked good. I went to the bank on campus and got him the cash.
$1200 canadian (~$1000 US?) for a less than one month old unibody 2.4 MBP. Good deal no? Now...Do I flip it or keep it?

Keep Keep Keep
-
I'd feel a smidge guilty after that, but I'm one of those super honest types, lol.

haha lucky you. of course you should flip it. i see you are waiting for a 17" mbp... put the extra cash towards that!
-
what a dork... why would he buy a MBP and not like the OS, and not just install Windows on it ... sounds like it was just an excuse cuz he spent more money than he had and needed the money...
-
That's awesome. And here I was feeling a little guilty selling my SR base model MBP for $1500 a little over a month ago. I'd say flip it and put it towards the higher end 15 or the 17.
-
I'd say sell it, seeing as you have a 17" coming. Great timing though.
-
Didn't you get your previous one for free too from some raffle?
-
No that was my old one which I gave to charity I believe.
My old unibody I bought. -
I'm still on the fence about what I'm going to do.
The good part is I can't notice a difference in speed to the 2.53 I used to have.
I think I'm going to post it for sale locally and see what I can fetch. If I can get a solid $500 profit I'll let it go. If it doesn't go locally I will put it up for sale here later. -
no chance for me
-
Man, you guys always have such good luck...
-
sorry haqoc, Im all about the money.
-
Cant claim it to you.
-
Did the Apple employees comment on your lowballing? (I'm assuming you did that in the store)
-
Keep in mind this was my campus computer store, not a Apple store.
As far as I know, the employees working at my campus computer store are just that...'employees' so I don't think they cared too much. -
DOn't know what that means.
-
It means that it's not your fault for not selling it to me at the price that I suggested.
I am desperate for a macbook book pro but I dont have enough cash
-
You can sell your black macbook for a start. I don't know what you situation is, but I'm sure you can save a small chunk of your monthly income to put towards the purchase.
You could probably get one for what...$1699 from apple refurbished store. You could sell your blackmac for ~700, and you'd only need to make up about a grand. For someone with a decked out desktop like that I'm sure you can find the money somehow. -
aw my monthy income is almost barely enogh for my to survive
and the price I suggest you is almost everything I have left
I may have to start robbing MBP around campus
-
I HATE YOU.
I really REALLY wish that happened to me. I'd get that in a matter of miliseconds. That's truly the cheapest Unibddy MBP ive ever heard of -
I think the original guy who had it really hated Mac OSX that much to get rid of it at that amazing price.
How much you think a 2007 MBP (Santa-rosa, 15-inch) would go for these days by the way? -
The guy on the post wouldnt be the first one. One of my friends bought the white Macbook about a year ago and returned it 3 days later for the same reason.
-
around 1500 (2.4 ghz model)
-
no way! you can buy new 2.4 alu for that price from ebay!
-

sure, but its the macbook... smaller screen, weaker gfx. others actually prefer the older model mbp's too. i think 1500 is fair. -
Sell your macbook and desktop then. That would do it lol.
-
nope,I meant pro-average price for 2.4 is 1600-1700,and if you minus cashback,which is 14% ATM,it comes to ~1500$
-
I'd buy it right now if I had the money!!!!!!

whoa no way! haha thats crazy... -
the macbook is original belong to my cousin, he went out of the country and let me keep it for 1 year
, so I cant sell it. But sure I can buy it back from him with a nice deal and sell it for profit and buy a macbook pro, but it wont be enough anyway
-
Ok everyone I decided to keep it after all. WHy....?
1) Heck of a deal...I paid just half of the retail value (incl. taxes)
2) The 17" MBP will have to wait. I'm still skeptical on the issues it has and will wait until the next revision to buy one. This 15" will suffice until that time. Even after a year from now I could probably still sell it for what i paid for it.
Because of this, I went ahead and bought a clear Speck see thru case. It is simple amazing. I can't be happier about the case. -
maybe buy MBP17" when Snow Leopard release or so
-
Nice choice ToshibaDude! I would keep it too, especially at that price and hold off on the 17.
-
Considering the current issues associated with the 17", i'll advise you to keep you 2.4Ghz. It's a very good machine and will last you a long time. However, if you don't need the portability of the 15.4", you can go fo the 17" when the issues get resolved.

Congrats ToshibaDude ! What happened to your older MBP ?
-
The 2.16 generation I sold on here to buy the 2.53 alum. Then I sold the 2.53 alum in anticipation of getting a 17" alum MBP.
But then I got this 2.4 15" alum MBP for cheap so I decided to keep it until the 17" MBP are revised. -
I am not a big fan of OSX; it is not bad but it is not great IMHO. It works for some people but it probably feels very weird to people who do not like it.
-
Every machine has it's pros and cons. Now this is a more un-biased view on Apple.

OK I thought about it, and I now retract my congrats.
The laptop was obtained through deceit, and I do not support it.
-
He had every right to say no, but didn't. That's his fault, not mine.
-
Do you fell guilty at all
-
wearetheborg Notebook Virtuoso
You lied to him, thats what makes it unethical and crossing a boundary for me
You offering $1000 is 100% fine.
You yourself used the word "gullible", it means on some level you know you "duped" that man
-

this is why there's a food chain. toshibadude did nothing wrong and no one should be blaming him for shrewd business.
-
It really seemed that the man was desperate to get rid of the laptop. toshibadude was the excess drop of water which caused the spill.

If you lie, its not shrewd business, its a conjob. Frankly I'm stunned at how people are accepting this. When did lying become acceptable? What if a car-ignorant person goes to a car shop, and the mechanic lies to him, tells him xyz is required when its not, and asks the person if he wants to get xyz ? Is that not dishonest ? By your and OP's logic, its all OK as the car owner can always say no.
This is the statement I have a real problem with. If ToshibaDude had omitted this statement, and instead said "since its open, I'm only willing to pay $1200", then I would have no problem with the deal, and would have congratulated him on his shrewd business skill.
That one statement makes it a conjob. -
Well, $1200 is not that much lower than what he could have sold it for used.
Lets say, he did refuse me. He paid for that the educational price of 2044 + 13% Ontario tax = ~$2300. I found several ads on local craiglist/kijiji for $1800-1900 brand new sealed. Thus an open one would fetch a little less than that. So in total I only duped him out of $4-500 at most. Hardly to feel guilty over.
I'm sorry, but since when is getting the most bang for you buck something to feel guilty over?
I will admit that $1200 was still a lowball, but even if he didn't budge on $1500, I probably still would have picked it up. -
Being a Corporate Management-Finance (business) major, I've gotta say and agree with the idea that you must strike while the iron is hot, and execute on the best deal possible. If he was really unsure of selling the unit for such a price, he would have held back; some people simply don't operate on it and simply jump on the first offer possible, and they think nothing of it.
The guy obviously wanted to be rid of the unit, and the selling point for what he had wouldn't have been much different overall, not to mention his task of listing, communicating, and selling the unit.
Then again, I'd sellout anyone for the right price, so...
And just to note: 13% sales tax? Eww! I thought California's 8% (now 9%) was high. -
check ebay-you can get new one for 1500$ with cashback,so I don't think that 1200 is a bad price.
-
The definition of 'duped' is "To deceive (an unwary person)."
If you really have 'duped' someone then I think that's a terrible thing to do, and has nothing to do with 'getting the best deal'.
Oh boy...I'm back with a 15" MBP
