Not good. Not good at all, when you consider they could have left some power in the hands of the consumer (ie, a manual mode) but chose not to. I didn't like the idea of totally being at the mercy of what they thought would be best. Now I know I don't. I think I'm gonna wait at least until I see how they address/fix this.

Surprised nobody else has commented on this...
Doesn't surprise me really.
But also doesn't really affect the whole 8 hours battery life thing, no matter what GPU they are using for the most part. -
ts a new tech and untested. I'm sure the feature will get patched and inmproved.

I guess I need to get someone with one of these to test out Wineskin... it launches a Xquartz X11 server that should be calling for OpenGL, so hopefully it turns on the 330... but it might always do it even if your running a simple app that doesn't use the OpenGL....
anyone with one of these want to check if when you launch X11.app if it turns on your geforce? if it doesn't... does it turn on when you run glxgears, then turn back off when you close glxgears? -
I started a thread on Apple's graphics switching as compared to Optimus here, but it has fallen into obscurity at the bottom of page 2 now. We should probably combine the two threads together, though.
In any case, using OSX is all about giving up control of various aspects of your computing experience. Apple has a point in that things are just easier if the OS doesn't bother you with them, but sometimes you would like to have a choice. -
using only discrete, battery life falls into the 4-5.5 hour range at 60% brightness.
using only integrated, battery life is between 6-7.5 hour range at 60% brightness.
it matters. it matters a lot. -
I'm more concerned with the discrete GPU not kicking in when I need it to. If I encounter problems with this when my MBP arrived, is it grounds for a refund?
I don't want to jump the gun here, but this is a huge deal since I don't have control over the switching. -
centrik, you can always turn automatic graphics switching off until they fix this.
-
I havnt had any issues with safari and watching whatever videos I can find along with 4 spaces and running vmware fusion on and off I still managed 10 hours and 30 minutes with automatic gpu switched on. All on 1 notch of brightness of course which is plenty bright on an anti glare screen.
Either way I just carry my iPad to school and with 50% brightness on this thing with all my textbooks loaded and after 9 hours on campus I still have 55% battery life when I get home!
Maybe it's because I don't use tweetie? -
It's also one of few cons I had to consider before making my purchase. It's also the main reason I will always have a PC desktop around. -
Good thing someone brought this to attention. It'll help prospective MBP 13/15 make their decisions.

If I could buy some of my law school texts for a fraction of its hard copy price, I'd jump on the iPad in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, the digital copies are limited in selections. -
And they were 50% cheaper than printed versions.
Oh snap. New MBP's proving to make poor graphics switching decisions.
