Basically, with Apple, just get the best thing you can afford. The macbook is definitely too small for graphic design, however he could always get an external monitor and display adapter if he consistently works at one place. I'd really say go for the MBP if he can afford it, he won't be disappointed. He might want to upgrade the ram, too if he's doing graphic design 2gb would be ideal. Don't go any lower than 1gb there.

If money ain't a problem then I would suggest the MacBook Pro. The extra screen real estate would definitely come in handy in graphics work. The dedicated video card of the Pro wouldn't hurt either.

    Ditto

Having the highest screen resolution you can get is the very helpful in graphic arts, I used a 1600 x 1400 Resolution screen at my classes, it was so nice.

Agree with everyone else, if money and size doesn't matter, get a 17" MBP with 2GB of RAM. The 1680x1050 res (at least) is a must for someone into graphic design.
