I have neo office currently. I have been told open office is more reliable and compatible then neo office is. I tried it once before and did not like installing that X11 program thing. (Still not sure why it's needed or what it does as neo office does not make you install that).

Is there a difference in compatibility or reliability between the two?

I agree, stick with NeoOffice. X11 is pretty resource-consuming, and I don't see an "incentive" to use it when there's NeoOffice which isn't as resource consuming.

Just a note of interest, there is OpenOffice for Mac being developed right now, which won't be utilizing X11, but its not scheduled for release for a long time.

Something else that puzzles me; they're working on OpenOffice for Mac that will be native, but it will have an Aqua look...but Leopard is arriving in a month and they're replacing Aqua with a new look anyways...

Leopard is the sixth version of OS X and the sixth version of the Aqua look. It doesn't kill Aqua nor does it replace it with something else.

The OpenOffice.org team is going to use OS X's API (programming interfaces) which shouldn't change much with Leopard. If the default look of the widgets change, it will inherit it automatically; programmers don't usually deal with this themselves. Apple's own applications are the exception to this rule.
