I installed this SSD in my Macbook today.
Does anybody know of any disk optomizations for SSDs on the Macbook (or in Leopard)?
Also, how does Leopard's defragmenting work? How do I turn it off.
One last thing, what's a good disk benchmarking application?
Thanks.

For benchmarking you can use HDTune, but I think that only works under windows. And anyone correct me if I'm wrong, but last I looked, Leopard doesn't have any optimizations for SSD's.

That's exactly why I am asking. I'd like to find a good benchmarking program for Leopard.

I don't know of any optimizations that you, yourself, can do to make sure leopard utilizes the SSD to its full potential; that is the filesystems job. We'll just have to wait for the filesystem devs to update or come out with filesystems that take SSD operation into account.
Leopard, or more specifically, the HFS+ filesystem doesn't 'defragment' per se. The filesystem uses different methods and tricks to reduce the amount of fragmentation that happens in the first place, so there really isn't any defragmentation to turn off. Just let the filesystem to its job, it's good at it. -
As Robgunn pointed out, the optimizations that deal with hard disks are buried pretty deeply in the system. You'll have to wait for 10.5.4 at the very least -
I'd think that SSD optimizations are going to creep into Leopard slowly and steadily. The OS just has to treat SSDs differently, remove lots of tweaks that only make sense on spinning platters, and so on. It's gonna take a while, particularly because SSDs are going to be faster than HDs even with the added burden of spinning platter code. -
Did you mean 10.5.5?

Well...I have spent the weekend doing various tests...and I can say this drive is FAST.
Also, for those who are wondering, I did not experience any slowdowns with small writes or with multi-tasking. It just plowed through everything I threw at it--audio recording, video recording, encoding, files copies, playing videos, opening photos, etc. I even did a whole bunch of these at the same time, and still now slowdowns. From all of my tests, I can say with some confidence that this drive does not suffer random slowdowns (at least not in Leopard).
I'll post some benchmarks and real-world tests later. -
I posted some benchmarks here.
