I just ordered a macbook pro 13', and this will be my first apple product.
I honestly thought I would be the last person to order a MBP 13 after Apple's recent (or lack of) update, but I literally went around a full circle for this purchase. I have been hunting for a laptop for about 6 months and went through many laptops in the process to finally ordering this MBP.
My needs on a laptop were the following:
1) Something light, it had to be a 13 or 14 inch.
2) Good build quality, not the plastic crap that most laptops are made of
3) Good screen!!!
4) Good battery life
I don't game nor I do I use Photoshop or other graphics intensive programs on a regular basis. So I initially ordered a Lenovo T400 couple of months ago. It was a fantastic laptop, but the screen sucked!! So I had to return it. Then I ordered an Asus...same problem...screen was horrible. I literally searched through every laptop in this 13 inch category and found that MBP 13 and the Vaio Z were the only laptop acceptable to me because of the screen quality and overall build quality/battery life.
The Vaio Z was fantastic in every way and I really wanted to like it, but unfortunately the Vaio Z had a severe flaw for such an expensive laptop. When you look closely, there are diagonal lines which are pretty evident when streaming HQ videos. That's something really annoying and not many people talk about it, and it's major flaw.
I wanted a MBP 13 for a long time, but I was always hesitant for various reasons. I was waiting patiently for their update, but when Apple didn't put the core i series chip, the MBP 13 was out of the picture.
But here I am weeks later, and finally realizing that the MBP 13 is the best 13 inch laptop OVERALL when taking into account the screen quality, battery life, build quality and weight.

). The unsupported assumptions in your last sentence earn you a C- however.

Flight,
I think you will be very satisfied.
I am very happy with my MB, and have similar considerations. But I do use CS5, including Photoshop and the speed is fine. I have the CS5 suite incl PS on both the Mac main partition and use the windows version of PS and InDesign on the Windows 7 VM.
I may even follow you in getting the same machine. I can afford any Macbook Pro, and I still think the 13" is right for my purposes. My MB goes everywhere with me, and all my larger PC notebooks haven't been with me anywhere in a long time.
Congrats. -
Also like SP said it is fast enough to do more intense computing like PS... -
-
i have the grandpa of the unibodys. the aluminum unibody machine before it was named "pro". It was the first unibodys released. Im sure they have made many improvements since then and I have had no issues with mine. so you should be set for awhile. The only thing that annoyed me was the auto brightness adjustment. it adjusts your screen brightness depending on the lighting in the room. I had to turn it off to manual and set the brightness to my liking which was higher. not all the way though unless you want your retnas to burst into flames.
-
I've had the 2010 13" for awhile now, and I still love it, awesome machine, wouldn't trade it for anything. Even though you don't game or do a bunch of graphics, the 320m in these things are very impressive if you decide you want to.

Enjoy your Mac and don't let them get to you. -
Sure, the MBP 13 compromises in performance compared to other laptops, but it makes it up with battery life and overall stability. So, if battery life, screen and build quality isn't really a concern, then one could easily buy a $700 laptop with very nice specs. But it's the overall balance that makes the MBP 13 a good choice for normal consumers. -
its because he has a different opinion.. and has a different 13" laptop on order... so because you said the MBP was the "best" at anything, offended him because he knows what is best.... but hasn't figured out best is simply an opinion.
-
Congrats to the OP. Love the 13 MBPs myself; great laptop. Best selling MBP for a reason. Out of curiosity, which model did you opt for? The base 2.4?
-
-
Bronsky's criticism there was valid and had nothing to do with "Mac bashing"; the OP was put forward as logic, and criticism is to be expected. -
-
Simply listing a bunch of parameters doesn't make for an objective criterion as to what's best, so your last statement still has a lot of unsupported assumptions, as Bronsky said.
For the statement to be fully objective, you would have to establish weightings and numerical valuation for each criterion. To some people, the light weight of the Z might outweigh the flawed screen. -
-
As such, your last statement still could've been phrased better, because stating a bunch of parameters says nothing about the relative importance of said parameters. Mentioning your needs would've been enough, or at least putting forth screen quality above all else.
If screen quality is indeed the single most important requirement (enough so that the Z's screen, which is generally considered quite good, was insufficient), you made the right choice. -
-
Your writing Bronsky off as simply Mac-bashing isn't doing anyone any good either.
The word "logic" in the thread title makes it fair game, especially when in good humour -
Saying he should have phrased it better is merely your opinion, b/c clearly some of us her understood what he was saying.
you cannot ask for the pure objective using subjective statements yourself...
In good humor of course -
Indeed, technically everything is subjective because all we know comes from our own perception of reality, but once you go past solipsism there are things that are, in a practical sense, objective.
Solipsism aside, saying that the VAIO Z is lighter, more powerful and more expensive, but with less battery life than the 13" MBP, is objective (enough). Some comparisons, like the build quality of the two, can't be objectively made at the moment because they haven't been out long enough to break in statistically significant quantities, but it is possible to be sufficiently objective in that area.
Screen quality is one area where a lot of subjectivity comes into play, though. It seems that it was the OP's main criteria for deciding, but of course there's nothing wrong with that. -
If you look at his past posts you will see that he isn't exactly an Apple fan.
-
Well, that third Bronsky quote of yours is true, at least.
Considering Bronsky agreed with the OP's choice, and his criticisms were entirely unrelated to Apple, I think it's reasonable to give the benefit of the doubt in this case.
Also, while the word "fact" wasn't used, the OP's last statement "But here I am weeks later, and finally realizing that the MBP 13 is the best 13 inch laptop OVERALL when taking into account the screen quality, battery life, build quality and weight." was stated as one. -
-
You said Bronsky was treating him like an "Apple fanboi", which implies Apple had something to do with it.
In any case, no-one can tell for sure what's best for the OP, though the OP definitely has the best chance -
Was just a kicker to insure the point was made to the OP that he was inferior.
I agree that the OP is the person with the best chance to know what is right for them. -
lackofcheese: since you are still bickering away...I think you know how to differentiate between opinions and facts, and you are choosing not to do it. If you read the whole post, you can obviously tell its an opinion. One can take anything out of its context and support one's argument. So you can't just take the last statement and try to show that I posting a fact. When any one says, something is the best---automatically---that's an opinion.
As I clearly stated in the title "logic behind the purchase" it clearly means logic behind the purchase. Simple as that. I didn't just buy something because it looked "pretty" and because people at Starbucks carry it, rather I bought it because it meets my needs the best out of any other laptop in its category.
I don't understand why you are adamantly defending Bronsky. If you want to anally nit pick my post, you can do the same for Bronsky's comments too. But I don't see you doing that. I will do it for you.
My logic grade? What grade? Completely baffling comment.
-
Indeed, Bronsky's "logic grade" is basically nonsense. While you could've justified your purchase with far fewer words, your story was much appreciated.
Still, even though you had four criteria, your purchase of the MBP would be easier to justify based on screen quality alone. To the best of my knowledge, the VAIO Z and the MBP are the only current 13" with screens that are generally considered to be high-quality, so if the VAIO Z didn't do it for you the MBP was, quite simply, your only option. -
-
Indeed, one's choice is one's own, though justifying it to others is helpful nonetheless.
Though there may or may not have been have been a Mac-related ulterior motive, at face value Bronsky's insults didn't have to do with Macs. -
I fixed it for you. He doesn't need to justify his purchase to anyone else. I guess you just like to argue. Heck you defend him here but elsewhere you're arguing with bronsky.
-
Dear OP,
I also have made the plunge, and for the same reasons you are.
I will receive it thursday~ can't wait!
I love the idea that i can use my mac at home with a nice external monitor, then take it to work and not worry about my battery dying.
The only thing I'm scared of is OS X. But I'm definitely willing to learn~! -
