I recently switched to OS X and I found Finder ok for Joe computer user but lacking.

Hello Path Finder. It is a super nice app that I would recommend to anyone wanting more from finder.

I used "Default Apps" (RCDefaultApp freeware) to set Path Finder as the default app for finder calls.

    This sounds interesting...

Can you tell me some of the great things about it over Finder?

OK! I trialed Path Finder, and am liking it a lot! There's no need, as far as I can see, to use RCDefaultApp freeware to make finder calls default to Path Finder, since there's an option in Path Finder preferences to do this anyway!

    Couple of questions:

1.) How do you hide the Path Finder icon in the top bar? It bugs me.

*FIXED* In Preferences - called Global Application Menu - disable it!

2.) How do you Get Info on several folders without it opening more than one Get Info pane? I'd like to see how much space e.g. 3 folders take up without having to add all the MBs together!

3.) When I send files to the trash, I can't empty the trash without opening regular Finder first.

*FIXED* - You can't. Limitation of application because of Finder tie-in. Use shortcut keys to do so.

4.) Assuming I can fix question 3, how do you hide the Finder icon so it's no longer in the dock?

*FIXED* Probably not worth trying to mess with this... :D

    Thanks!

    *EDIT*

After using this some more, it seems the only thing I don't like is that it consumes more resources to use it. For example, re-sizing the window is quite jerky in Path Finder, but silky smooth in Finder. Moving the window around is the same thing. It's not HUGELY jerky or anything, but it's clear that Finder is a smoother operator, despite not being anywhere near as powerful...

Yea as much as I like pathfinder, it isnt perfect. But as for moving windows around, it works perfectly fine and is smooth for me. Did you get the latest version of pathfinder?

Where in the options did you find how to make pathfinder the default? When I mean default by right click on say documents in the doc and and choose "Open Documents" do you get finder or path finder?

Yep latest version! It's MARGINALLY less smooth, but it's clearly not as smooth as Finder to me, and resizing the Path Finder window is more stair-stepping that smooth too.

There's just small things that aren't as fast in Path Finder. Another example is the snappiness in which you can click the back/forward arrows in it. In Finder, it's instant back/forward, whereas there's this tiny delay in Path Finder. It's small, but by comparison it's there.

That said, I'm probably going to buy Path Finder. It seems to kick butt! I love seeing how much space my drives are taking up on my desktop icons/folders!

You said originally that I did not have to use the "default app" shareware to set PF as the default that it was in the options. If so where is that at?

When I say default, if you right click on your documents folder in the doc (assuming you have it there) and left click on "Open Documents" Finder will come up for me (even if I quit it using PF) unless I use the shareware app to replace PF as the default over Finder. Set as the default PF comes up showing my documents folder.

I agree its a tad slower....but 10x the power of finder. The bread crums...the stacks...the customizable action menus. They should make it for Windows.

I put the Documents folder in my dock, right clicked it and chose "open documents" and Path Finder opens just fine for me. You sure you have the option checked to use Path Finder instead of Finder?

Go into preferences, and go to "General" at the top. Hit the Next arrow four times, and then you'll see the "Set Path Finder as the default file viewer." I think that was it. Try it and let me know. :)

I'm having a Path Finder issue right now. If I have a .dmg file and I double-click it within Path Finder, nothing happens. However, if I right click and choose "open with Disk Mounter" it works fine. However, this is the default choice anyway!

Any ideas how to fix this?

    **EDIT**

Seems this was a bug 4.8.2 that was fixed in 4.8.3. Sad thing is I'm using 4.8.3. A reinstall fixed it. Weird...
