Perfect. How much is THIS going to cost me?

Well, we got some light rainfall last night and the side walks were all frozen over in the morning. Being careful and walking slowly, I still ended up slipping on a patch and my notebook bag slammed on the ground. When I got to class I took a look at it and found the left side of my MBP, where all the ports are, had a large dent in it, and most of the side was a wavy mess. Can't use one of my USB ports since it's dented. I also have an ever-so-slight dent on the boarder around my screen (pushed in about half a millimeter.

Everything seems to be fine and in working order, I checked TechTool and everything checked out, and I haven't noticed any problems with it, so I assume it's just the case that needs a replacement.

My questions are: how much does apple charge to replace a case, and if I send it to them, tell them to repair it to factory spec, and pay for it, will Apple Care still cover future problems if they arise, or am I S.O.L.?

Well, I found a 3rd party that sold the bottom cases. $250.

My coworker spilled soda on his keyboard, then decided to clean it with 409, after I told him to only use rubbing alcohol if he needs to clean it (using a q-tip). Apple wants $500 to fix that but he found a keyboard for $100 from the same place I found the case.

So all together... it will be probably $500+

You could also try to take it apart and use a tiny hammer or something to try to get it back into shape.

I was thinking about that, but I'm worried if a problem (possibly a more expensive problem) arises in the future they'll say "yeah.... no, you dropped it, that why it broke."

Right. Mine got dented when I dropped my MBP (was in a ****ty laptop backpack. I was having other issues with my MBP (which I still have). But I knew after that, if Apple took a look at it, they'd blame the dent/drop and charge me a ton to get it fixed.

Apple REALLY needs to sell ADP coverages.

    Funny side story though....

My headphone jacks been on the fritz. If you pull the cable even lightly, the audio cuts out. So the other day, I'm at work and the cable gets wrapped around my chair and I trip when I get up (those cables ALWAYS get in the way). The large part of the headphone plug pulled out of the adapter and I could see the adapter was no where near flush (probably bent at a 15 degree angle)... so I was like... guess thats it for my headphone jack. But I tried it. Now it works better htan it did before :-D

Now this is why Apple should have accidental coverage.

But yeah, I really don't know...but I guess it wouldn't hurt to consult your local Apple Store about it. They can't force you to get it repaired if you decide its too pricey or anything.

Wow. How hard did your notebook bag slam on the ground for this to happen?

Personally, I wouldn't bother to fix it by yourself. Try to get Apple to replace it if you have Apple Care. Otherwise, get a USB hub to make up for the defunct USB port.

Man that sucks. Sorry to hear that. I had something similar happen with my Asus laptop. Luckly, they fixed it under warranty. Hopefully Apple will do the same for you.

It hit pretty much full force right on that spot. I guess it hit the edge of the sidewalk tile or something.

As for apple replacing it under warranty: very unlikely. I had a problem a while back and the very first thing they asked me was if I dropped it.

Since it's probably out of warranty if you took it in as is, tear the laptop apart, and shave a block of wood to match the original contour, and try to beat it out.
Get some nylon screwdrivers and bend the USB port back into shape.
Blend any impact marks or scratches with scotch-brite.

If all goes well, it'll look like it was heavily scratched or has wear.

Apple will say your warranty is voided by that. Your best bet is to take it to an authorized service provider and pay for a bottom case replacement if you really want that fixed, I'd say. Since it works (at the cost of the use of one of the USB ports, granted), I'd say you might be just as well off without doing so, but it doesn't hurt to see how much they'll charge you for it.

Unfortunately, no, as that isn't a defect, it was accidental damage which isn't covered by Apple's warranty.

I wasn't going to go to the Apple Store for that very reason, and an authorized repair place is closer. I'll ask them about it on the phone before I bring it in. But before I can do so I need to obtain a copy of CS3 for my windows PC. Or I can't part with it :(

Major bummer. I've banged around my laptops before... never produced a dent like that.

I think that mac will charge a lot of money to have it fixed. I think that you can get a case for yourself and fix it by yourself. Remember that when a car has a dent, it takes a lot of money to have it fixed.
