Hey guys,
a piece of plastic broke off the edge of my mac keyboard a couple of months ago and now there is like a small hole(?) on the left side...I am way past my warranty....is this a common defect or something?

a picture may help.

The casing of the plastic Macbooks are prone to breaking/cracking after a few years of use. Apple will replace the case for free if you still have warranty, but otherwise you will have to pay.

If this is on one of the MacBooks, then yes, it is a common defect. You should be able to take it to an Apple Store if there is one near you and they'll take care of you. In many cases, they will fix the computer free of charge as this is a common defect and they could easily have a class-action lawsuit on their hands if they were to deny fixing it. They will have to replace the entire top section of the MacBook's case meaning you will get a brand new keyboard and trackpad as well.

Yep, seen and heard about that happening alot. Also you stole my avatar!

White Macbook build quality is beyond crap. It is very common for plastic case to crack and pieces to break off.

Its worth a try to at least go into an apple store and see if they can replace it for you at no cost. Most likely you won't have to pay.
