I was looking at these for instance. Does anyone know if they're any good? It says it's only compatible with iPod, but I'm assuming it should work with notebooks as well, or am I missing something?![]()
I'm not an audio-phile so I wouldn't know.

I'm just looking for something with strong, clear sound and bass, cause I'm looking to ditch my bulky "over the ear" headphones.
Thanks!![]()

I would suggest a pair of SENNHEISER PX100 are a great price and have lots of bass and detail.

I've heard the inear ones from Bose are pretty good. I think they're $100 and come with 1 year warranty.
-
Check these out: Shure
Shure always rank well in affordability/performance. Look around for reviews on them. Gizmodo did an inear review not too long ago I believe. Finding other reviews should be a snap as well.
I'm on my second pair (lost the first) -
In-ear headphones from companies like Shure and Sennheiser are usually very good. Also, purchasing them from retailers such as Amazon are usually significantly cheaper than Apple. Be careful not to purchase cheap ones from Amazon Marketplace or eBay, since they are highly likely to be fakes.
-
Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Round of <s>drinks</s> rep for everyone, on me. -
Bose is no good. Avoid it.
Stick with Shure, Etymotic, and Ultimate Ears.
I currently have the SE310 and like it. The SE500 was a bit overkill for me since I use IEMs only for gaming and some MP3s when I'm on the go.
Actually, you should probably stay away from Etymotic if you like strong bass and generally a "fuller" sound. My ER-4 was quite detailed (can give my $5000 speakers a run for the money in detail retrieval!) but lean on bass. -
Agree on going for those Shure as well, I wanted to get that pair just didn't have the money, but Shure are indeed a high ranker with music equipment, they make excellent turntable needles which I used to use and the only reason I swapped out needles is because I changed styles -

For earphones stick to the likes of Sennheiser, Ultimate Ears and Shure. The most basic earphone I would recommend would be the CX-300 from Sennheiser. However, if the sound requirments you have stated you probably want to go for something a bit more expensive Sennheiser CX-95 or a Ultimate Ears triple fi 3.
Although there is nothing exactly wrong with Sony earphones but you can do a lot better for the price. -
I've had the Bose in-ear headphones and hated them. I upgraded and got the Apple ones and have to say while they are good you will often find many complaints about them on the forums (e.g., overpriced, hard to position in external ear canal which makes base hard to detect, etc.).

Just rule out Bose and Apple. Bose headphones are okay but hugely overpriced (just like everything else they make). The Apple ones are probably fine, but by the look and sounds of things they did not quite get their ergonomics right, funny that.

I personally had the CX-300 for 2 years now and they have been great! As for wear and tear, My buds still look spankin new but I also care for them. I am a techno head so bass is important and the cx-300 provides great bass. Only thing you have to be aware for is that; there are a lot of fakes out there! I at first bought a fake and it lasted me <3 months because the right side went out. Also there is a sound difference between fakes and real ones obviously due to different drivers in both. Hope I helped.

Ok thanks. I was just wondering mainly about the Sony earphones, cause the product page says only compatible with iPod. I didn't know if they have some controls that are iPod specific or not.
I'll check out those Shure earphones though. They're kind of pricey though. -
You can probably get Shure SCL3 within your budget.
-
I had the shure's and after a year of use they plastic around the ears became brittle and cracked. Sent them off to Shure and they would't replace them even though I had the 2 year warranty, although they would repair them for a price.(So they are my first and last pair of Shure's) I am currently using the Utimate ears SuperFi 5's and absoluetly love them.
I have been hearing good things though about the Vibe earphones sold at the apple stores. -
-
DONT GET SONY!! Atleast from my experience from 2.5 yrs ago, I had two different pairs of sony's in-ears and the wires are sooo brittle that they tear away and show the wires within!! The white one I had teared its wiring and the black one I had went out in one ear. So I am done with sony and am a Sennheiser fan. My next upgrade will be the ultimate ears super.fi 5 extended bass.
I would recommend the sennheiser CX series for a start.
EDIT: Things may be different now with sony so you might just need to look for recent reviews. -
omg.
SHure and Sennheisers ftw. -
I had no problem getting Shure to replace my cracked E2cs :S
-
I've heard favorable service stories about Shure and Etymotic.
-
Had the cx300 (still do) they were good bang for buck. Upgraded to the iphone versions of these the MM50IP, they only lasted about 8months, then the cable/wires broke at the point of the socket. So don't get those.
I have read amazing things about the ultimate ears.... but I got a good price on ebay on the new apple in-ears. The sound of the new apples is noticeably better then the cx300's (almost as good as Etymotic ER6 I used to have), but it is dependent on getting a really good seal with the buds, something which due to the design of my ears and the shape of apples silicon tips, is quite a task. Its fine if you sit still, but as soon as you walk, the movement dislodges them slightly and then they sound crap. On the upside the vol/call/forward button is very low profile and one of the best there is IMHO.
I am about to buy some COMPLY foam tips which are meant to be fantastic, albeit pricey and non long lasting, but this should fix the issue.
But if I had my time again I think I would go the ultimate ears this time round.
a
p.s sony suck, over priced and poor build quality, at least they were.
Also I would avoid the ER6 and other (very pricey) models that require deep canal insertion unless your sure you can handle that. I found it too difficult to position easily and quickly, and after prolonged use (ie more than 1h) they became too uncomfortable to even wear. -
Those Sony earbuds aren't bad, but I would recommend paying a bit more for the Apple In-Ears (which have been reviewed to be quite good for its price) or a bit less for the Creative EP-630s, which I had for two years (and loved).
I'm currently on $300 Sennheiser IE7s.
-
I have some of these... they work decently for me, but not what I was hoping for. If you do not have any hearing problems like me, I'm sure they'll work good for you as other people who have tried mine say they sound great.

sennheiser should give you the strong bass you are looking for, i'd skip shure unless you are willing to pay 300 on se310 but at that price point you are better off with some other brands...
as for bose, while they are fine, i'd only get one if you can get it at 75% the retail to make it acceptable given the usual premium attached.
if you are hiphop/rap-illiterate like me who think dr. dre is some accoustic ph.d, you are wrongbut monster turbine has had good reviews on them.
skip etymotics since you said bass, those two words don't go along well.
it really depends on what sort of price you are willing to pay for the appropriate phones for you -
I have Creative EP-630. They're dirt cheap on Ebay. Sound excellent to me.
I read they're the same as some type Sennheiser. -
-
-
I have Dr. Dre Monster Beats in-ear ... It was totally amazing to me. But the price is high.
-
Another vote for the Creative EP-630. They're inexpensive and the sound quality is good for the price. Durability is average though, but it has survived the abuse I've given it.
-
Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. I'll look into them in the coming days.

Lethal Lottery Notebook Betrayer
Soon I will get a decent pair from sehiennneheheiser or shure but untill then the skull candy inked buds are a great deal for $15. They fit great and have reasonable sound.
-
but i still prefer sennheisers and shure lol, (not saying they are bad, those have really nice bass levels) -
-
btw, will those Creatives work with iPhone 2g?
Please help me find some "in ear" headphones :)
