Hello, I am highly interested into buying one of the new macbooks. I really want the macbook pro to be honest, but shoving out the $2,000+ before accessories might be a little hard for me, since I am only 18 and broke college student haha. Since this will be my first Mac, does apple usually run any good promotions when buying a new laptop? Are there any indications of a slight price drop from now by about the end of March?

Historically apple rarely lowers there prices unless they are releasing new models(or updates), which I don't think you will see till more into the summer at the earliest. But someone else may no more on that. The best way to get a break is use the student discount. Unless you need the bigger screen or better graphics card, the uni-body macbooks are just as good.

Yea I would like the bigger screen, just for the fact it will be for my dorm. I would like to watch the occasional DVD and the occasional Fallout3 or equivalent haha. I'm in the process of finding someone who works for Apple to see if they can hook me up! No luck so far.

    Btw thanks for the reply.

but if you apply your student discount, won't it drop to approximately $1700? you could always buy a refurbed or the previous gen, these are still awesome laptops...

My student discount drops it to about $1899 so a $100 discount. =/ So with Applecare and tax it's easily over $2,000 grand again.

Try refurbished model. They are good as brand new MBP.

You can get an educational discount. However, you may want to check how much tax you may be or may not be charged. Another dealer who doesn't charge tax is Amazon. Amazon is where I bought mine and I received a $100 rebate.

Cjro9, TBH, if you are truly a "broke" college student you don't need to buy anything better than the white $999 Macbook. Unless you are enrolled in special engineering or design classes where a powerful CPU/GPU is a necessity (and you never mentioned any of that) then save your money.

Please accept this as constructive criticism but many of you here claim to be a "poor" or "broke" college student but seem to find $2000+ to buy a MacBook Pro when there are other options such as the $1299 Macbook or the white $999 model. A lot of financially strapped students can barely pay tuition, but to get the pro model Mac notebook to play Fallout? Either you're not as broke as you say or your priorities as a student are a bit out of place. Honestly, look for cheaper options from Apple if you are strapped. You can still get an educational discount on the cheapest Macbook.

I appreciate the criticism, however my major is actually Chemical Engineering. =). I myself am very broke, however, my parents are not. With that said I still do not like them buying me electronics that are quite pricey, hence the reason I was looking for a good promotion so I could feel better about letting them help me out a little bit.

I am kinda doing the same thing OP... I think I might just get a new macbook pro, 15" basic. With the student discount, I mean there is only like a 80 dollar difference for me between discount and refurbished...

    He he ....

I did the same thing when my parents took me to Honda showroom to buy me a car as a graduation gift. I select civic (I like it so much, & I don't want to spend their money for any exclusive car) , but they brought me S2000. They thought I just select civic to save their money, but my dream is S2000..

Actually I mean if they notice you are buying base model to save their money , they will buy maximum performance model they can afford without telling you :)

That's how lovely parents work. I'm not joking
