    Hey all,

I got WinXP Pro SP3 yesterday. I've been trying to install it on new macbook using bootcamp but for some reason during installation there is a restart stage. After restart I get "Disk Error" message and asks me to press any key to restart.
Even if I press any key nothing happens. I tried to boot on mac os, removed the setup disc and restarted again. still got the same error message. i feel that the "disk error" is meant for the HDD?

why do i get this? how to go around it? I have allocated 20 mb fat disk space for this installation. i tried deleting the partition and starting over again. still same problem.

    Hey try this:

When you reach the restart point, hold the trackpad click button down for a good 3-5 seconds. That will spit the CD out. And continue booting into Windows.

Did you mean 20 GB of HDD space?
Also, right in the beginning of Windows Setup, make sure you select the right partition to install it in. It should be:

    C: BOOT CAMP

Anything else won't work. Oh, and (quick) format it to NTFS.

Let me know if any of this helps..

hey, thanks for your reply. yeah sorry about the typo i did mean 20 gb. and I am selecting c:boot camp. so the only thing I didn't do is ejecting the cd before booting. will try this now.

i didn't format into ntfs as I would rather to keep it fat32 so i can access it and transfer files to it from mac os. so when it asks me about the formatting i just select leave as it is option. is that where i'm going wrong?

    thanks again.

    UPDATE

I just deleted the partition to start a new partition and new installation. Yet I also lost the hard drive space! now my 250 gb shows 230 gb. >_<

why is that? it was fat32 not ntfs

Oh yeah, you should format it again (FAT32) just for the sake of having a Microsoft product do the formatting. Maybe that's what Windows doesn't like..

And also, I be you know the drawbacks of FAT32 right? No file larger than 4gb.

On the other hand, a bit of googleing will allow you to write on NTFS from OS X - Macfuse
and have Windows access your OS X drive with Macdrive.

The latter is not free though.

edit: how did you delete your windows partition? From Bootcamp assistant with "restore" ?

edit2: remember to hold down the click until the drive stops the cd and spits it out...

    That's REALLY weird.

What does Disk Utility say about your OS X partition?
Does it report the correct size?

If the Windows partition still shows in Disk Utility, you can delete it from there..

dis utility doesn't show windows partition. i clicked on verify disk. didn't get any errors. it also shows the wrong disk capacity "232.6 Gb" but whats in the brackets "(249,715,376)" which is correct.

I know that if the hard drive is 250 gb it will not show as 250. But 20gb?! thats the amount I put for windows and now its gone >_<

232.6Gb is about right for a 250Gb HDD.
So I don't think you actually lost those 20Gb.

Do you remember checking your HDD capacity BEFORE installing Windows?

    cdnalsi is correct.

For goodness' sake - this is the base 8 vs. base 10 reporting issue, which runs rampant in comments of people on retailer sites saying the manufacturers are lying about their HDD capacity..... :)

249,xxx is base 10 numeric calculation, and is the marketing number.
232.6 is the base 8 calculation that the OS uses because bits are arranged in groups of 8/byte, so that is the number the OS finds. It is normal and correct, and nothing is missing .

It works out to all HDDs have a reported base 8 capacity of 93% whatever the number on the box is.
