Hi there, first post here after reading some topics here.

I have set my eyes on the 15" MBP with the 2.4gz processor (I will upgrade the RAM to 4gb manually, apple charges too much for this)

I was going to purchase it at the end of August and I'm wondering if Apple are going to make any changes to the Hardware/OS in the MBP between now and August.

    Thanks :)

perhaps snow leopard is going to be launched but hardware wise, i don'y think we'll see an upgrade this soon. be careful when you buy your ram, there are many compatibility issues with the new apple ddr3 rams. not all 3rd party rams are sompatible

Nehalem Mobile should be launched sometime this summer or fall. It's a processor that I would definitely wait for. It should provide at least a 20% performance boost on many applications over Penryn. I don't know when Apple will start using the chips.

Only if you're pushing the CPU to the max, which most aren't likely to do.

[Only if you're pushing the CPU to the max, which most aren't likely to do.]

The addition of an Integrated Memory Controller reduces memory latency to main memory. Typical register-to-register ALU instructions take 1 cycle. Many do take more. Main memory latency can run from say 70 to 200 cycles so CPUs are frequently stalled waiting for memory reads. A substantial decrease in the number of cycles will result in your programs running faster.

Intel's mobile model is to get the work done as quickly as possible and then go into a low power state which is the reason for having powerful mobile chips - to get things done quickly, along with a bunch of low-power states so that a minimum of power is used at idle.

Those familiar with the performance improvement that AMD saw when they introduced their IMC back in 2003 will see that again as Intel has finally arrived.

I don't get the point of worrying about a update if your not going to be buying it for 6 months, just wait and see, NO ONE knows when Apple will do updates.

If you plan on buying at the end of summer, you may want to snag the Apple's back to school deal with a free ipod of your choice. That with a student discount is bound to be a solid deal.

    Amen to that.

I'm thinking about buying a laptop 5 years from now.......do you think Apple will make any changes to the Hardware or OS by then?

Unfortunately, with technology anything you buy nowadays is out of date the day after.
Its impractical to wait for the next update, just the way it happens.
Also with Snow Leopard is rumored that new imacs will be released. The current MBP's aren't halfway through their cycle yet.

Generally apple updates their hardware after they finish the after school deal. So while it is a good deal, if you want the latest hardware id suggest waiting till octoberish. iirc thats usually when they announce the new laptops.

They use the student deal to clear out their old stock, and bring in the new ones shortly after.
