I was quite surprised to see this news.

I reckon it was because of the increased press thanks to the new iPhone, as a result more people will have had apple in their minds when they go to buy a new computer.
-
I'm actually tempted to say it was in part because of the free iPod touch promotion. It also shows that Americans like overpriced, overhyped products more than people in the rest of the world.

americans like overpriced and overhyped products that are on sale
lol
i think more and more ppl are become familiar and comfortable using OSX and buying into the whole accessibility thing. -

I know, its students only, but Apple notebooks are getting extremely popular with students.
And they do it every year in summer, its just that this year, the deal is significantly better - instead of a nano as usual, its a top end iPod touch. -
the states has more stores to get there products displayed at in comparison to the rest of the world. People can actually try out quality products and from there news travels quickly, I think that's likely increasing there market share in the US plus with there many products to display Ipod \ Iphone \ notebooks \ imac's, etc
Hard for students to resist.. Then again most students need parents to buy it!
This was the cause of myself getting my first mac when I visited the states in April of 07, went into a mac store in Houston. Took 15 minutes listing to the "geniuses" and showing me the machine and I walked out with a new machine. They do have a really good setup that's appealing! -
This is for Q2, and the free iPod Touch deal was only part of the last few weeks of Q2. -
Apple FTW!!!!!

Yup my Macbook Pro \ Ipod touch 8 Gb arrived today FTW!! w00t hehe

I'll be honest. I've wanted a Macbook for years, but the prices always keep me from purchasing. They're about twice as much for a comparable system when it comes down to it. So I always end up purchasing a PC notebook. It's really hard to resist though because I think some of the features are quite nifty (such as the magnetic power plug/cord).
The iPod and iPhone has also assisted in boosting sales for Macbooks as well. People have this silly tendency to want things to match. Go figure.
Anyway, Apple sells excellent products and Steve Jobs is a Genius for knowing exactly what people want, when they want it, and that's what has kept Apple going all these years. I'm glad to see they're in the top 3 now, it's just a shame that they won't drop their prices some. -
overpriced? compared to what? other computers running another companies operating system? the hardware is a small part of it, you are getting something that is only available form Apple, they can price it however they like, it is a different type of competition.
overhyped, as far as I am concerned they are not hyped enough. -

Of course, I respect that article, but as I've noted before, its very hard to argue in such ways as there are counter-articles for nearly anything.

Reading the comments below the article show how embarassed Tuan should be of his 'comparison'. -
You have to consider alot of things in that too..
The first commenter is also mistaken about the hard drive in the iMac, which is full size.
Personally, I don't take anything said in a blog as factual evidence. It's just some guy who wants to ramble and rant on the internet, and found a suitable venue to do so. If you had a link to a real hardware site that has been established for a long time, then I could read it without a bag of salt. Of course those kinds of sites don't want to risk their image by posting misinformation either... -

In any case, I like apple products. I like Steve Jobs, but when I compared my just purchased notebook with a macbook pro (had to be a pro, because I needed a 17 inch screen and a number-key-pad build in for work) What I came up with was a $1500.00 configuration for my PC and a $2500.00 configuration for the macbook pro for comparison. And unfortunately the Pro didn't have the number-keypad either.
Believe me, I wanted that Macbook Pro. But the price was just too far beyond what I wanted to spend. So maybe next time around. (though I said that last time).
In any case I am glad to see Apple still climbing the sales ranks.Another year and it looks like they'll have a big enough share to be considered main-stream.
