You have ONE YEAR FROM THE DAY YOU BUY IT to purchase it AppleCare for your computer. Not from the day you register it, but the day you buy it.

hmmm that so odd, my sister had a hard drive fail on her ipod
and she had it for more than a year, went into the store and the guy told her buy applecare for it and they would replace it otherwise they cant do anything, so she bought the applecare in store and the guy took it on the spot

i guess apple's laptop policies are more strict? is there anything i can do to give it some sort of warranty or something or is it basically just in my hands and hope it doesnt break

Well, here's the thing, their official policy is you have one year to buy AppleCare, but just like your sister's example, they're not super strict about it, but by technicality they didn't need to cover it. So usually it'll be okay! You can always try to go to an Apple Store or something and see if they'll let you go with getting a warranty!
