Alright i heard a few months ago that macbooks do have trouble connecting to some routers. After a week of research i here this is mainly due to the fact that there is security and they have trouble with there password. I hear this is definatly true with the WRT54G, which the router i have. Now i dont have security infact my network is completly open. Now some people on the apple forums said that i shouldnt have a problem connecting but i just want to hear what some of you have to say. Also if i do have a problem what routers do you guys use to connect to the internet wirelessly. Pleae dont reccomend the airport. That is waaaaay to expensive for my budget for routers.
Thanks for your help guys.
Hear is a link to the thread i made regarding that connecting problem on the apple forums for my router.

I have a WRT54G (an older model) and my MacBook connects to it just fine... no problems at all.
-
The WRT54GX is also compatible, and the WRT300N is also
-

No problems whatsoever! My linksys router is on the opposite side of the house on a different floor... and I still get a strong connection.
-
Yeah same here with my alienware. I have just heard that macbboks have connection problems with this router brand thats all.
-
The WRT54GL is also compatible. Sometimes my MBP forgets the password... but otherwise works flawless.
-
I've got the WRT54GS and no problems connecting my MBP or iMac. I had to enter the settings manually, but that was no problem. The ONLY problem I ever had with this router was sometimes it would totally drop the wireless connection, and the wired connection would slow to a crawl. I updated the firmware and havent had a problem since

We still have to reset our router once in a while, but that's typical of my experience with Linksys products.
-
no problems here with a wrt54GL with 3 macs.

So most of you have had problems but not like really major ones. I think i am gonna trust auroras one this one. Thanks guys.
-
remember SOME problems are user error
not all, but some.
-
Yeah all i want to do is connect to the router. Its a completly open connection so i dont think i will have a hard time at all.
-
I had the WRT54G as well (upgraded to the Netgear MIMO router a few months back) and my <s>MacBook</s> iMac never had a problem connecting to it.
-
No problems here with my three-four year old Linksys WRT54GS.
-
i'm having trouble connecting my macbook to linksys 2.4ghz router when I enable WEP.
When the WEP is disabled however the macbook connects just fine.
I tried both 128 bit and 64 bit encryption in the router's WEP settings, but nothing seems to work. I keep getting a message from my macbook saying the password I entered is incorrect.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem? -
How do all my old threads come back from the dead? anyway i have mine set to WPA2. Its 128 bit secure connection. Try that. Btw mine is a linksys wireless n router now. The older on crapped out on me after the power went on and off in the house.

At least their learning to use the search feature.
I would not recommend using WEP, it only takes minutes to crack. You should use WPA(2) AES Personal with a random generated key using all printable chrs a min of 20 chr long. Run with the SSID Visable and you want have any connection issues. -
what blue said.
-
I use the WRT54G with my MBP and have had no problem with the two whatsoever.
-
tanks a lot, but my router doesn't even have the WPA security option... probably too old (its' the first version of linksys 2.4).
The issue here is that whenever I enable WEP (which is the only encryption available here) the macbook won't let me connect. I haven't had any problems connecting to any wireless routers before.
is this a familiar issue to anyone? -
WRT54G here, too, with a Macbook. No problems.

The airport card prefers the SSID to be visable, otherwise the connection will constantly drop.
So you really need to upgrade the router. I would load the dd-wrt firmware on it. This will add the WPA(2) option plus a lot of other features and bring it up to modern features. The other option is get a newer 11n router.
I would go the dd-wrt route. Cheaper and a good option.
